#3: A CLASSIC ZATOICHI EPISODE 5 out of 5 stars.
113 of 113 people found this review helpful.

This 3rd entry of the Zatoichi series is also the first color episode. It is also a classic, in my opinion. This film opens up with a tie-in to the 2nd Zatoichi episode. Zatoichi has killed Kenbei [in episode #2], and Kenbei's loyalists are out to avenge the death of their boss by seeking to kill Ichi. Kenbei's brother is the leader of these avenging loyalist's, and in a twist, he is an ethical member of the yakuza. He believes in the Bushido code. Quite a departure from the usual "bad-guys" Ichi runs into.

Also in this episode is Ichi's sensei, Banno: The man who taught Zatoichi his skills. However, the sensei is a changed man. This is not the honorable sensei and mentor that Ichi recalls. Banno has lost whatever honor he once had; and his interaction with Ichi is sad to watch. Ironically, the yakuza after him have more honor than Ichi's former mentor. Quite a switch from the usual Zatoichi fare. Tokuzo Tanaka, who directed this film, did an outstanding job with the characters in this film. Moreover, Banno's sister, Yayoi, has fallen in love with Ichi. And Ichi loves her.

Therefore, Ichi ask's his former sensei for her hand in marriage. This causes resentment with Banno, who scoffs at Ichi. Truly a sad episode for Ichi. Banno, the antagonist in the film, and Ichi, the protagonist will clash. But will it lead to a sword duel? And what about the ethical and upstanding brother of Kenbei? Will he duel Ichi? Or will he forgive the blind swordsman? This film is an outstanding Zatoichi episode. Will Yayoi and Ichi stay together?

Banno betrays everyone around him, and as a master-swordsman who trains pupils in this episode: they too are used as objects to be discarded at the whim of this most dishonorable man. One of the pupils in particular is Kingo. The betrayal Banno mete's out to this pupil is the final straw for Ichi. The cane-sword weilding Ichi will tolerate no more. It is time for action. The entire film is great. Cinematography, music, colors, and the plot. A truly outstanding film. Highly recommended. [Stars: 5+]

Editorial Review:

Masseur Ichi, the blind master swordsman who became a cultural phenomenon under the gentle touch of Shintaro Katsu, finds you can't go home again in the first color film of the long-running adventure series. Redemption waits just out of reach when his old master's sister offers herself to the humble hero, but his corrupt master (who has thrown his lot in with a local gang of bandits) will have none of it. The hearty reunion turns sour and a showdown is inevitable. Quieter and calmer than the previous films, this entry emphasizes the metamorphosis of Ichi from jovial scoundrel to tragic hero while still delivering the short, swift swordfights that highlight the series. Ichi's reluctance to enter battle is matched only by his fierce, fatal attack: a fight with Ichi rarely lasts more than a single searing stroke. The fold-out insert features trivia and a recap of previous films. --Sean Axmaker

#12: ANOTHER WONDERFUL ZATOICHI EPISODE 5 out of 5 stars.
97 of 97 people found this review helpful.

Director Kenji Misumi did a great job with character development in this 12th Zatoichi outing. As with many of the films he did with Shintaro Katsu [6 in all] I noticed he did a great job with developing the characters for the most part. And in this episode he remains true to his directorial skills. Zatoichi [Shintaro Katsu] meets a Chess playing samurai named Jumonji [Mikio Narita] who does not like to lose. Travelling together these two characters make for an interesting watch in this particular episode.

There are some good twists to this episode, and although they should be expected by now after this 12th entry, it it pleasing to see how director Kenji Misumi utilized his talents to emply these twists. Moreover, the way they are woven into this Zatoichi fare is certainly interesting. There is less blood than in most of the Ichi episodes, but the story more than makes up for this. The characters in this episode of, "Zatoichi and the Chess Expert" are a real joy to watch, and you will not be disappointed with this excellent episode. I highly recommend this wonderful film.

#16: ZATOICHI THE TRUCE MAKER? 3 out of 5 stars.
68 of 68 people found this review helpful.

This 16th episode of Zatoichi tends to have a more complicated plotline than usual. This may be due to the fact that there are quite a few complicated characters in this film. Farmers in the province that Ichi has wandered into have clashed with the local Yakuza bosses, who wish to see the farms fail in order to increase their revenues.

The champion of the farmers are led by two different groups. One is by benenvolent and caring boss who wants to see the farmers taken care of better, and the other is a sort of philospher-samurai who wants to start an agrarian cooperative of sorts. The Yakuza bosses want to see the farms fail, because it will help increase their gambling revenues. Sound a little complicated yet?

The acting in this episode is very good; however, it seems as if the director Satsuo Yamamoto was trying to put too much into this particular Zatoichi episode. Moreover, lost in this film is the noble qualities that we are used to with the Ichi character. I believe too much reliance on severed limbs, and lots of blood was the major problem with this episode. Yes, I am aware that Ichi lives in violent times and the nature of the swordsman sometimes requires the lopping off of a limb or two. But good writing always takes precedence to the violence.

However, the cinematography in the film is absolutely beautiful as usual: The stunning Japanese countryside is shown in all its splendor. I would not say this was the worst Zatoichi film. It could have been better; however, the storyline just didn't go anywhere with me. Recommended, but with caution.

Editorial Review:

A threat is uttered a blade is drawn a flash of cold steel and then...a dozen attackers now lie silent dispatched by the lightning sword of Zatoichi. A humble masseur and gambler Zatoichi wanders the countryside of Japan going from town to town plying his trade and rolling the dice. With kind heart and lethal sword skills he is protector of the innocent and the ruin of wicked men. A pop culture icon since his screen debut in 1962 Zatoichi (played by Shintaro Katsu) was a matinee favorite throughout the 1960s. After a dozen years and 25 films the blind swordsman transitioned to the small screen in 1974 in the series "Zatoichi Monogatari". Episodes 14-26 have been compiled in this three-volume six-disc set.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE/MARTIAL ARTS UPC: 631595081480 Manufacturer No: TSDVD0814

Editorial Review:

With 25 film sequels and upwards of 100 TV episodes, Shintaro Katsu is the legendary Zatoichi! He's a low-ranking blind masseur who lives by the Yakuza code and answers his foes with a deadly cane sword. By far one of Japan's most time-honored screen personas, Zatoichi is to this day the ultimate everyman anti-hero.

Combining violent action with slapstick comedy, Zatoichi's Cane Sword is a superb example of samurai filmmaking. The village of Tonda is ruled by violent and unscrupulous yakuza, and Zatoichi takes it upon himself to clean up the town. The film blends brilliant color photography with breathtaking action sequences while offering a look into Zatoichi's past, as the blind swordsman learns the origin of his famous cane sword, and discovers it may soon fail in battle

*The entire Zatoichi series includes 26 film episodes. Home Vision Entertainment will release Zatoichi episodes 17, 18 and 19 this August. In an effort to maintain the integrity of this collection DVDs from HVe are numbered in order of movie release. Episodes 14, 16 and 20-26 are not available from Home Vision Entertainment.

#20: TWO GIANTS OF JAPANESE CINEMA 4 out of 5 stars.
84 of 84 people found this review helpful.

This 20th entry of the Zatoicihi series finds the legendary actor [Toshiro Mifune] in the role of Sasa. The character Ichi [Shintaro Katsu] is tired of killing and decides to go to the peaceful and tranquil village he rememebers in the mountains. However, this is not the same tranquil village that he last left. Sasa [Mifune] does not like Ichi at first, but eventually comes to respect Ichi in this very long [116 minutes] Zatoichi episode.

I like everything about the Zatoichi films. And what's not to like about Toshiro Mifune? One of the greatest actors ever. But this episode is more of an average to above average outing of the Zatoichi films. Maybe I came to expect too much from such outstanding persona's of the samurai cinema. The film does not disappoint as a Zatoichi film; however, with two excellent stars one would expect something greater.

This film is more part dark-comedy, and long-drama, than one is used to in most of the other Zatoichi films. And as fans of Ichi I would definetly recommend this movie. However, do not expect too much from the title--as this is more of an averge Zatocihi film. Above average considering the fact that there are some good qualities to the film, and does star the great Toshiro Mifune. However, I did expect more of Mifune's character than he gave to the film. Recommended.

Editorial Review:

The collision of Japan's two most famous cinematic swordsmen--ShintarĂ´ Katsu's blind masseur, gambler, and rascally hero Ichi and Toshiro Mifune's unnamed wandering mercenary and scruffy antihero who goes by the appellation Yojimbo (which means, simply, bodyguard)--makes this one of the most riveting chapters in Zatoichi's long-running saga. Not quite friends and not really enemies, the rival swordsmen meet in a once-peaceful village caught between rival gangs, a swarm of government spies, and a fortune in stolen gold. Director Kihachi Okamoto gives Yojimbo a marvelous ambiguity that Mifune invests with a grubby sense of honor, whether growling and drinking and stirring things up or fearlessly strolling through the climactic gang war, dispatching attackers with a swipe and a grimace. But if the story belongs to Yojimbo, the film is Zatoichi's: his minor scams and clowning demeanor hide a reluctant warrior and a tragic hero. --Sean Axmaker

the sword is perfect. the blade is strong, solid, and slightly sharp. there was a crack in the sheath but nothing a little glue couldn't handle. it even comes in a decorative tube with zatoichi art on it and one of those cloths that you can wrap it up in. i am satisfied in every way.

Editorial Review:

CAS/Hanwei has produced a wonderful reproduction of the walking stick/sword (SH1014) used by the deadly bland swordsman Zatoichi. The blade is carbon steel with a etched temper line for aesthetics. The handle and scabbard are done in sleek black making it look like an ordinary walking stick, but in an instant, the flash of steel.
