Zatoichi #4 5 out of 5 stars.

I really appreciate Home Vision Entertainments production of the Zatoichi movie series. Each release has been an excellent presentation of Zatoichi. As a Japenese Samurai Movie fan I think that this series of DVD's is the best. The character of Zatoichi is very compelling and each story helps you identify with this Blind Swordsman who always trying to do good for others. The examples of Japenese culture during this time period is very beautiful and detailed. Shintaro Katsu displays a wide range of emotions as Zatoichi and his display of swordmanship is excellent.

Cool 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the best in the TV series. Zatoichi shows his skill by cutting a cup in two and caught everybody by surprise. Soon, a samurai is eyeing him for battle. Watch out for the end battle.

#4: AN ENTERTAINING ZATOICHI EPISODE 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This 4th episode of Zatoichi begins with a more comical sendup than in previous episodes. The charactor traits Shintaro Katsu would eventually define as Zatoichi have now become more ingrained in the personality of Ichi, and the following episodes will only reinforce the humorous, beloved, cane-sword weilding, blind masseur and ethical man to the audience. This episode is enjoyable, as ALL of the Ichi episodes are. The film begins with a price on Ichi's head; and an inexperienced swordsman by the name of Kisuke, tries to claim this reward. He fails of course, and as he lays dying he informs Ichi that his mother Maki, is with the yakuza.

Therefore, Ichi embarks on a trip to see the mother, and inform her what has happened. However, she does not resent Ichi, as she understands that it was in self-defense. Also, reprising her role in this episode is Tane, the woman who loved Ichi [episodes #1 and #2]. Tane is now with a samurai. [I will not tell you about her character, as it will spoil the film for those who have not viewed it] There are many characters in this particular epsiode, with many subplots going in different directions. The cinematography is excellent as usual, and Zatoichi does flash his sword in a wild ending. An enjoyable watch. [Stars: 3.5]

Excellent Movie! 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 32 people found this review helpful.

I was a little hesitant about buying this dvd. I have watched samurai movies in the past but found them too slap stick, boring or dramatic with the only good parts being the fight scenes. But never the less once I popped in the dvd and watched the first 10 minutes, I was hooked. The story lines are basically the same but make no mistake these are good quality movies. The directors do a great job in balancing the right amount of humor, fight scenes and acting dialogues so the movies are never boring and they are quite funny. Shintaro Katsu is a "natural" in these films and I would highly recommend any other Zatochi films with him in it.

Zatoichi at his finest! 5 out of 5 stars.

Let me say this, I saw my first Zatoichi movie back when I was 14 and since then I was absolutely hooked.

The move was beautifully done and I can not stress enough what an awesome character Shintaro Katsu can play. I have all of his VHS tapes and I am slowing starting to build my DVD collection. I have DVD's from overseas subtitled and let me tell you.
It invokes a feeling that no one anywhere, time, or place can in this day and age. The movies are genre films (Feeling invoking). DO you remember the first time you saw seven, primal fear, titanic - (kind of cheesy now) but at the time the movies gave you a feeling right.

Well all of his movies are like that. This one here is 1 of my top 10's! 5 out of 5. He has over 30 movies made and also 100's of TV episodes. Trust me on this. Its great. Once you get hooked you'll love it as much as me. BUT BEWARE YOU HAVE TO ENJOY FILM> If those action packed rockem sockem's are your only cup of tea then not for you.

Another excellent Zatoichi story 5 out of 5 stars.

Zatoichi#9 The Adventures of Zatoichi has the blind masseur once again trying to do someone a favor and facing unexpected problems. By delivering a note to a young woman who works at the inn where he is going to greet the new year, Master Ichi becomes involved in the plots of Jinbei, the local Yakuza crime boss. He meets Miss Sen, whose brother was betrayed by Jinbei, and Miss Saki, daughter of a village headman last seen in the nearby area. The two women's stories are intertwined as Zatoichi attempts to help them both.

The Japan shown in the Zatoichi movies is not the Japan of Kurosawa and Mifuni.
It is rural Japan made up of small villages controlled by easily corrupted Yakuza bosses. The code of Bushido doesn't apply: any Samurai are usually masterless ronin devoid of any high standards. Crime is common; peasants and bandits survived as well as they could. Life was often miserable.

Zatoichi is a Japanese movie icon because of the acting of Shintaro Katsu. Master Ichi is unique because of his personal code of honor- be kind to those who deserve it, but beware to those who would take advantage of a homeless blind man. He hopes never to have to draw the razor-sharp sword hidden in his cane, but usually has no choice. The sword-fighting scenes are superbly choreographed, realistic, and full speed with no slow-motion slice-and-dice shots.

Watch for the interactions between Ichi and the children he encounters. He respects innocence in any form. Also pay heed to his treatment of the elderly alcoholic beggar called `Gramps' in the subtitles.
Viewers would expect a homeless blindman to be deeply cynical, soured by the misery and evil surrounding him. Zatoichi believes in justice, no matter what life brings him. All the Zatoichi movies are available at Amazon. They are well worth watching. I recommend them highly.

Must have 5 out of 5 stars.

Zatoichi Vol. Four is as good as the first three volumes. Like some of the other episodes they do tend to be simular to some of the films. Despite this, the series is excellent. You forget your watching a tv show and you are immersed into the continuing story of ichi. I am so happy that these are finally coming out on dvd, slowly, but being the huge fan of Ichi that I am, I couldn't get enough with the 25 of 26 films available. Where's #14???? My only complaint is that media blasters would release the series by seasons and not volumes. The 4th vol is still season 1. There are 100 epsiodes to the series and with only 4 or 5 on each vol, well do the math that's a lot of volumes. If you like the films and you are a fan of samurai cinema, these dvd's are a must have.

Good Zatoichi Movie, Excellent DVD 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

The Zatoichi series, about a blind swordsman who travelled Japan and got into many adventures, were always a cut above the typical martian arts melodrama of the 60s/70s. More than most of their genre, they were character studies (with Katsu Shintaro bringing a likable quality to the title character) and, even more so, focused on plot. Action is actually kept to a minimum, particularly in this film, which will disappoint many viewers.
In "Zatoichi at Large," (one of the last of the series), Zatoichi delivers the baby of a dying peasant and takes it to her relatives. However, he's soon accused of stealing the woman's money and the mob is out to get him.
The DVD from a company called AnimEgo present the film in absolutely stunning 2.35:1 widescreen. The colours are so ripe they almost burst off the screen, and image is very sharp. It's even watchable in the many very dark scenes. Sound is the original Japanese audio, with subtitles (they're multicoloured - nice touch). The liner notes are disappointing. They don't deal with production of the film so much as with 'fun facts' (the value of the currency discussed in the movie, the possibility of men breastfeading, etc.), along with a Katsu Shintaro biography. These are reprinted more or less in the production notes on the disc. Other extras include character biographies (which discusses their place in the film) and trailers for several Zatoichi movies and some entries of the "Lone Wolf and Cub" series.
