The 3rd volume of the Zatoichi series of movies continues where the last one left off. Zatoichi returns home and meets up with his old sensei. However, his homecoming is marred by the fact that the brother of one of the men Zatoichi had to kill previously wants revenge. To make matters worse, his sensei's sister wishes to marry Zatoichi, but the way of the sword may prove to be greater than love.

The translation quality of the third volume is improved over the previous two movies. As such, some Japanese honorifics make it into the subtitles and rather than translate Japanese words for brother/sister into character names, they are translated as brother/sister. So that's a big improvement. I hope this trend continues in the next movies.

As for the movie, it is another good one. I'm normally not a fan of old movies, but there is just something about this samurai series that I really enjoy. Shintarou Katsu does a fantastic job as Zatoichi. The sword work is really something to see.

Bottom line: I really recommend this title for fans of samurai anime titles or who are interested in Japanese culture. If you are looking for a pretty good action/adventure flick with a bit of romance (similar to old American westerns), then this may be the title for you.

Editorial Review:

Masseur Ichi, the blind master swordsman who became a cultural phenomenon under the gentle touch of Shintaro Katsu, finds you can't go home again in the first color film of the long-running adventure series. Redemption waits just out of reach when his old master's sister offers herself to the humble hero, but his corrupt master (who has thrown his lot in with a local gang of bandits) will have none of it. The hearty reunion turns sour and a showdown is inevitable. Quieter and calmer than the previous films, this entry emphasizes the metamorphosis of Ichi from jovial scoundrel to tragic hero while still delivering the short, swift swordfights that highlight the series. Ichi's reluctance to enter battle is matched only by his fierce, fatal attack: a fight with Ichi rarely lasts more than a single searing stroke. The fold-out insert features trivia and a recap of previous films. --Sean Axmaker

Zatoichi #4 5 out of 5 stars.

I really appreciate Home Vision Entertainments production of the Zatoichi movie series. Each release has been an excellent presentation of Zatoichi. As a Japenese Samurai Movie fan I think that this series of DVD's is the best. The character of Zatoichi is very compelling and each story helps you identify with this Blind Swordsman who always trying to do good for others. The examples of Japenese culture during this time period is very beautiful and detailed. Shintaro Katsu displays a wide range of emotions as Zatoichi and his display of swordmanship is excellent.

Cool 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the best in the TV series. Zatoichi shows his skill by cutting a cup in two and caught everybody by surprise. Soon, a samurai is eyeing him for battle. Watch out for the end battle.

#4: AN ENTERTAINING ZATOICHI EPISODE 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This 4th episode of Zatoichi begins with a more comical sendup than in previous episodes. The charactor traits Shintaro Katsu would eventually define as Zatoichi have now become more ingrained in the personality of Ichi, and the following episodes will only reinforce the humorous, beloved, cane-sword weilding, blind masseur and ethical man to the audience. This episode is enjoyable, as ALL of the Ichi episodes are. The film begins with a price on Ichi's head; and an inexperienced swordsman by the name of Kisuke, tries to claim this reward. He fails of course, and as he lays dying he informs Ichi that his mother Maki, is with the yakuza.

Therefore, Ichi embarks on a trip to see the mother, and inform her what has happened. However, she does not resent Ichi, as she understands that it was in self-defense. Also, reprising her role in this episode is Tane, the woman who loved Ichi [episodes #1 and #2]. Tane is now with a samurai. [I will not tell you about her character, as it will spoil the film for those who have not viewed it] There are many characters in this particular epsiode, with many subplots going in different directions. The cinematography is excellent as usual, and Zatoichi does flash his sword in a wild ending. An enjoyable watch. [Stars: 3.5]

ZATOICHI TV SERIES, VOL. 3: EPISODES 10-13 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The Zatoichi television series ran for over 5 years, from 1974-1979. And with 100 episodes planned, this first season of 26 episodes will give fans of the Zatoichi films more of the delightful character of Ichi to enjoy. As with some of the other episodes in the first six volumes, there are some episodes that are directly from the film series: Some that are slightly different, and this Volume 3 is no exception. However, there are also some totally different plots in many of them, and this particular volume is a great addition to your Ichi collection. I rate this volume [Stars: 4.5]. The episodes are as follows:

#10: "THE SUMO WRESTLER WHO FOUND HIS HOME." Very good drama, and ending action by Ichi highlight this excellent episode. Zatoichi encounters a young man who is about to kill himself. Moreover, he is an orphan and Ichi sympathizes with the young man. That is until the young man [who is a sumo wrestler] tags along and follows Ichi. To the irritation of Ichi, the young sumo wrestler follows Ichi wherever he goes.In the background of this episode, there is a Ronin, who has been following Ichi. His name is Yaturo Soma, and he is good with the sword. However, Ichi discovers something about this young sumo wrestlers past and resolves to help him. The ending action is superb. There are lots of ending action scenes with Ichi--more than usual for the TV series. I liked this episode quite a lot. [Stars: 5+]

#11: "THE WHIRLWIND OF KISOJI MOUNTAIN." The beginning transfer on this episode is not good, but it does get better. Also, this is one of those episodes that culls a bit from the Motion Picture films. The episode opens with Ichi being accused of stealing a horse, and then thrown in jail. At the same time, a group of assassins are attempting to kill Ichi. Further enhancing this episode, is a side narrative with a doctor who has come to help the villagers while on his search for annual plants to use for medicines. Moreover, a yakuza boss has hired a marksman to kill Ichi, and here this episode will intersect with doctor, Ichi, and the gunmen. The film has a great ending with Ichi's swordplay in action. [Stars: 5]

#12: "HUMANITY AND JUSTICE." Good location shots highlight this particular episode. The scenery is beautiful. This is a very different episode in regards to the TV series, and the films. However, there are similarities, not too much though, to "Zatoichi #12: Zatoichi and the Chess Expert." This episode finds a female yakuza out to avenge the death of her father. In doing so, she dresses as a man, and acts like one. However, Ichi knows that she is a female. As this young woman seeks her vengeance, it is up to Ichi to save her. There are some funny element thrown into this particular episode--especially with boss Gonzo. All in all, a very good episode and a humorous and welcome relief to the TV series. However, there is plenty of ending action by Ichi, and he is incredibly quick with the cane sword. [Stars: 4.5]

#13: "THE 1,000 RYO RAFFLE." This is an interesting episode, and stars the young Yoshio Harada as a recently released prisoner. Shinsuke (Yoshio Harada) has come to seek vengeance on those who have wronged him. Ichi helps him in the beginning, and Shinsuke gives Ichi a raffle ticket. Unknown to either, it is a winning 1,000 ryo lottery ticket. Ichi and Shinsuke have departed ways, therefore, Ichi seeks this former prison inmate out. Going to Shinsuke's seaside village. Yet, Shinsuke does not want the money. He has a code of honor, and this code will not allow him to accept it. For he has told Ichi that he has given it way. Moreover, he has come back to seek vengeance. The new boss is not an honorable man, and it is a woman that Shinsuke seeks out--and that goes for the men who wronged him. Once again Ichi come to the rescue. It was good to see Yoshio Harada in this episode, who would also team up later in his career with Ichi in the film "Ronin Gai." Not a great episode, but entertaining nonetheless, with the predicable Ichi sword slashing ending. [Stars: 3.5]

Editorial Review:

A threat is uttered, a blade is drawn, a flash of cold steel and then ... a dozen attackers lay dead, dispatched by the lightening sword of one blind man: Zatoichi. A humble masseur and gambler, Zatoichi wanders from town to town plying his trade and rolling the dice. With kind heart and lethal sword skill, he is protector of the innocent and the ruin of wicked men.

A fake Zatoichi and an underhanded obligation 4 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

Zatoichi, in jail due to illegal gambling, meets a co-prisoner who has been sentenced to die on false charges. "Help me!" the Doomed Man pleads to the Blind Swordsman. After prison, a man Zatoichi meets on the road begins to impersonate Zatoichi, ringing up huge bills at hotels and Geisha houses, before sneaking off into the night. And from there, the story begins.

"Zatoichi and the Doomed Man" ("Zatoichi sakate giri" or "Zatoichi's Underhanded Obligation") has Zatoichi attempting to clear two names, both the prisoners and his own. The false Zatoichi is leaving a disgruntled populace in his wake, as he sells Zatoichi's reputation to local Mob Bosses, then ditches before the fighting starts. The real Zatoichi, mostly ignorant of this double-play, follows in the impostor's wake, trying to locate the one man who can free his prison companion, doomed to die.

A good flick overall, with the impostor Zatoichi having some really funny comedy scenes, and Katsu Shintaro busting out all of his amazing sword techniques. The Doomed Man himself is a blatant plot-device to get Zatoichi into action, but serves his purpose. Not really epic in scope, or amazing in plot, all the actors do a good job creating a decent character-orientated swordfight flick. You will have fun with this one.

Editorial Review:

Paired with a witty, harmless con man, Shintaro Katsu mixes intoxicating swordplay and side-splitting slapstick in a tale where Zatoichi's fate collides with an innocent man facing execution.

Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol 2 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

In the early seventies, I was enamored of the Zatoichi and Sword of Vengence movies produced in Japan, and viewed at the Toho Brea Theatres in Los Angeles. When the Toho closed down, these movies were lost to me and others. Now, they are back, on DVD, with Japanese wording and good subtitles! Thank you for making these great works of Movie History available again! Everything about them is excellent!! 10 stars would be better!!

Editorial Review:

The wild success of The Tale of Zatoichi demanded a sequel and star Shintaro Katsu was only too happy to reprise his role as the traveling masseur and blind swordsman. Star Katsu and director Kazuo Mori flesh out the enigmatic Ichi in this outing, creating a more haunted and less conniving character who prefers to keep his identity shrouded and his sword sheathed. Nonetheless the peace-loving swordsman is reluctantly and repeatedly forced to fight when he's attacked by a government goon squad, a gang of hoodlums, and an angry one-armed swordsman whose interest in Ichi is purely personal. This action-packed entry, which ultimately brings our hero back to the site of his previous film for the furious climax, practically revels in the concentrated bursts of Ichi's lightning attack.

The newly restored DVD features a small stills gallery, a fold-out insert with an essay by Tatsu Aoki (a self described "Ichi Freak"), and four collector cards. --Sean Axmaker

Editorial Review:

Comes in Red Or Black. If you do not choose a color, we will send you the red by default. This sword is called, "The Blind Swordsman Zatoichi". It is half tang and stainless steel with a hamon. This is used by Zatoichi as a Shikomizue, which means cane sword. The saya (scabbard) is constructed of wood, painted red with black around the meeting of the saya and tsuka, and then lacquered. Blade Length: 27.5 Inches Overall Length: 39.5 Inches Handle Length: 10.5 Inches Blade Material: Stainless Steel Blade Thickness: .29 Inches Zatoichi seems to be only a harmless blind anma (masseur) who wanders around the country making his living by gambling; however, he is also highly-skilled in swordsmanship, specifically iaijutsu. He does not carry a traditional katana, instead using a well-made shikomizue (cane sword). Shikomizue were generally straight lower-quality blades which could not compare with regular katanas, but as revealed in Zatoichi's Cane Sword, his weapon is nearly superior to one as it was forged by a master bladesmith just before his prime. A recurring theme of both the films and television series is Zatoichi protecting the innocent from oppressive warring yakuza gangs, and general injustice. His fighting skill is incredible, even more so considering he grips the sword in an inverse manner; this combined with his sometimes inexplicably keen ear, nose and proprioception renders him a capable surprise attacker. He is also most likely ambidextrous. Source Wikipedia

the sword is perfect. the blade is strong, solid, and slightly sharp. there was a crack in the sheath but nothing a little glue couldn't handle. it even comes in a decorative tube with zatoichi art on it and one of those cloths that you can wrap it up in. i am satisfied in every way.

Editorial Review:

CAS/Hanwei has produced a wonderful reproduction of the walking stick/sword (SH1014) used by the deadly bland swordsman Zatoichi. The blade is carbon steel with a etched temper line for aesthetics. The handle and scabbard are done in sleek black making it look like an ordinary walking stick, but in an instant, the flash of steel. Overall Length: 39-1/2" Blade: 28-1/2" Handle: 10-1/2" Thickness: 23" Weight: 1.8oz
