Jet Li in Action/Comedy; the Action can be good, but the 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

comedy isn't that good . . .

1998 R-rated Hong Kong Martial Arts film (set in Hong Kong, with Japanese criminals; R-rated for violence and some language). Also known as "Sat sau ji wong," "Hitman," and "King of Assassins."

DVD Features: The DVD contains the movie and some special features. The movie can be heard in English (Dolby Digital or Dolby Surround), or Spanish (apparently no Chinese option), and has a "English for the deaf and hard of hearing" subtitle option. The special features are: Director and cast filmographies, film trailer, "Jet Li Bonus Trailers" ("The One," "Meltdown," and "Legend of The Red Dragon"), and a photo gallery.

Credits: The movie stars Jet Li (Fu; "Romeo Must Die," "Once Upon a Time in China"), Gigi Leung (Kiki; "A True Mob Story"), Simon Yam (Kwan; "Casino"), and Eric Tsang (Ngok Lo; "The Accidental Spy"). The director is Tung Wai (also known as Wei Tung; "Fox Hunter"). Written by Chan Heng Ka, Vincent Kok, and Cheng Kam Fa.

Plot: Jet Li is a contract killer (or an ex-soldier willing to kill for money) after an assassin of a Yakuza boss. The boss had set up a reward for the one who catches his killer. A reward of One Hundred Million Dollars ($50 million for catching killer, $50 million for finding the ones who hired the killer).

Review: Like "Romeo Must Die," this film uses rap music as its movie music. Unlike that "Romeo" movie, I've never heard of this Jet Li film, and am confused by it. Due to the lack of Chinese language options, and based on the type of movie music, the movie seems as if it was intended for USA release (or rerelease), but I've never heard of it (though the movie appears to be badly dubbed and I believe that at one point, Jet Li's voice changes (odd they wouldn't have Chinese language option)).

I think that the movie is supposed to be something of a comedy, and there are some funny moments, but the humor seems a little off (especially considering the enormous blood spillage). This movie is not at all like I expected. I expected Li to be, and act, like an assassin. Instead he is mostly a novice (a skilled one, due to be an ex-soldier), and seems at first to be incompetent (maybe "slow"). Despite these comments, the actions scenes are interesting, while the comedy scenes, for the most part, are not (and the evil guys have some neat tricks).

The acting was average, the plot was somewhat interesting, the action scenes were good, but the comedy and music were, mostly, off-putting. Overall, I would give the movie 3.20 stars.

BORING!!! 1 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed the first 3 Lethal Weapon movies, but this one is a snoozer. Chris Rock is funny as a comedian, but as an actor he's in need of some serious help. The whole movie was so overblown that it's just ridiculous!

Don't waste your money. If you really must see it borrow it. It's not even worth the time to watch really, much less the cost to rent. Even Mel Gibson can't save this one from the trash heap.

Lethal Weapon 4 5 out of 5 stars.

Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, each now feeling too old to be doing what they're doing, try to stop the Chinese Triads from doing their illegal business in the U.S. Uncle Benny, Chinatown's mob boss, has imported Chinese slaves to pay for an artist to create counterfeit Chinese currency which the Triads (led by Jet Li) will use to buy the Four Fathers (heads of the Triads) back from the Chinese military. Chris Rock joins the team as a new cop and Rianne's husband. Lorna is pregnant and considers marriage with Riggs, and Leo Getz is back, now as a private investigator. Who said all movie series become worse with every installment? Lethal Weapon 4 is probably the best fourth movie in a series ever. I find it incredible that the magic is still there. But the person who really steals the whole show is Jet Li, this man is brilliant. Lethal Weapon 4 great ending to a great series, where the magic was always there.

Editorial Review:

Probably only the Hong Kong film industry could have produced this bizarre mixture of head-kicking martial arts action and daddy-and-me sentimentality. Veteran HK action director Cory Yuen (Fong Sai Yuk), who staged Jet Li's fight sequences in Lethal Weapon 4, steers the acrobatic Mainlander through a heart-tugging crime saga about a cop who has gone so far undercover that everyone, including his troubled son, thinks he's actually a bad guy. Pop-singing actress Anita Mui (Rouge) is a policewoman from Hong Kong who befriends and protects the kid until father and son reconcile and team up against the crooks. The action episodes, which were performed without stunt doubles or wires, are eye-popping wonders, and the kid, Tze Miu, is a true prodigy. (Sensitive adults may be horrified by some of junior's more extreme stunt work.) The tough-guy emotionalism is often shamelessly effective. But Yuen is a by-the-numbers journeyman director, and for the most part this a flat, square, unimaginative exercise. --David Chute

wonderfull movies, overpriced. 1 out of 5 stars.

While I enjoy both these movies I would never pay over $100 for a two pack of them when I can get black mask for under &10 and the lost empire for under $14. Just because they are no longer packaged as a two movie special (done to get people to watch the lost empire for a discounted price when they bought a jet lee film) does not mean they are a collectible. This is outright overcharging for a product. The two movie pack was ment as a discount special, not a limited edition.

Wonderful Fantasy, Get This Version!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

.. let me just say that this is one of the very few hk fantasy films that I own, and yet its one of my favorite movies. The story is basically about 2 swords that make the users superpowerful, and there are several kung fu schools looking and fighting for it. Jet represents one of these schools and througout the film, he masters several martial art techniques at an interestingly fast pace. He needs to protect his great grandfather, who happens to know where the swords are, from the corrupt schools. Warning, this is no Fist of Legend, but the martial arts are quite decent in my opinion. Yes, there is flying and superhuman powers in this film, but it actually makes it fun, not like dumb movies like the Storm Riders (this movie is too much). Plus, the film is extremely hilarious, especially the scene where Jet gets stuck in a cave. There are also 2 extremely beautiful women in this film that just made me go gaga. Watch it and find out what I mean. Apparently this was meant to be a two part movie, so just a warning this movie will not have an ending, this is only the first part. From what I've heard the second part of this story was filmed, but it never made it to the developing studio to be released, which really [is bad] because this film just leaves you hanging. However, I'd totally recommend a buy tho, but like I said get the original Kung Fu Colt Master. I got the HK version which is presented in 5.1 dolby, and the picture is pretty clear as well. I can't say much for the World Video US release version, except that the cover looks really [bad]. However, I've heard the transfer is pretty good and it has an english dub as well. But original Chinese w/ subs is the way to go for me. So go check this one out, and if you like it, try Swordsman II(w/Jet also)...check out my other reviews too, mostly HK flicks. Hope this was helpful.

Not Your Normal Martial Arts Fare 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Up to this film, I found most of these Hong Kong martial-arts films to be packed with action and most feature either a little humor (Jackie Chan) or beautiful scenery ("Hero," etc.) or wild special effects ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and more).....but this one features a mean edge.

I guess I'm not used to seeing Asian films with a lot of profanity (mainly f-words) or bloody scenes almost to the point of being gross, which one scene was in here. Yet: don't misunderstand: I liked this movie.

The hero is likable guy played by Jet Li. Despite his martial arts penchant for violence, he has a soft, boyish look to him and doesn't seem to fit the type. He's always the gentleman in here, with no profanity either. The villains, led by Tchecky Karyo, are brutal. Bridget Fonda, playing a hooker, at least wasn't some "Pretty Woman" type figure. She was rough, too, but at least realistic and I give her credit for not worrying about how she looked in here, beauty-wise.

Editorial Review:

Martial arts genius Jet Li explodes onto the screen with an intensity not seen since Bruce Lee. "Kiss of the Dragon" is not merely a thriller but a shocker. (San Francisco Chronicle) China's top secret agent visits Paris on a pleasure trip only to encounter government espionage at the highest level. "Li's action sequences are like an oil fire, spilling from one room into the next and lighing up in the interiors with heat and wreakage"! (The New York Times)

Much better than the previous Videoasia Wong Fei Hung multipack 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

FIST FROM SHAOLIN-

This is a ripoff of Tsui Hark's 'Once Upon a Time in China' series. Wong Fei Hung is played by a man who looks a bit older than Jet Li and he is an excellent screen fighter. Lam Sai Wing, Aunt 13, Kwan and Bucktooth are all played by lesser actors. The story is weak, but the kung fu is good. The wirework is bad at times, but overall the fights are very well choreographed. Recommended to fans of Wong Fei Hung movies, others should probably pass on it.

3.5/5

Picture quality is surpsingly good.

KICKBOXER-

This is a below average movie where Yuen Biao plays Lau Zhai (aka Foon), the same character he played in Once Upon a Time in China #1. There is a very tired story about opium smuggling and Yuen Biao gets caught in the middle of it. Yen Shi-Kwan plays an officer of the law and Yuen Wah plays the villain. I thought the fights were decent, but the Chang Shan (Shaolin Vs Lama) vs. Yuen Biao fight is the only one that really got me excited. Yen Shi-Kwan is one of my favorite performers but unfortunately he only has a few minutes of action.

2.5/5

Picture quality is decent.

SHAOLIN STYLES-

This is a very boring but somewhat interesting documentary on Shaolin fighting monks. These guys can do incredible things with their bodies but it gets boring to watch because it is so repetitious.

2.5/5

Picture quality is bad but watchable.

IN SWORD WE TRUST-

Since this is a Videoasia multipack, you are always guaranteed to get at least 1 bad movie. In Sword we Trust isn't even a Wong Fei Hung movie. The story is about some rebels who get into a lot of sword fights with the British. The story is beyond horrible but the action is decent. All the fights look the same so combine that with the horrible story and I am sure there will be people questioning how I sat through this whole thing. Well, I did, and the ultra bad dubbing was a big reason why. "But General, they already beat the poopydoo out of us."

0.5/5

Picture quality is very bad but watchable.
