Editorial Review:

The amazing Jet Li plays a cop whose job keeps him from attending his son's junior kung fu competitions. When sent undercover to infiltrate the gang of a brutal mob boss, his arrest--part of his cover story--exposes his son to humiliation in school. Meanwhile, his wife falls deeper into illness. The Enforcer is a classic Hong Kong blend of dazzling kung fu action and outrageously sentimental subplots. Yet as silly as some situations may seem (and let's be honest, they aren't any more ridiculous than your average Sly Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger movie), they're never boring, and when the spectacular fights begin it doesn't matter--Jet Li's stunning skill and natural charisma make him magnetic. Anita Mui, costarring as a police detective tracking Li down, gets to do her share of fighting as well. In the finale, father and son team up for a battle as funny as it is spectacular. If you only know Jet Li from Lethal Weapon 4, you owe it to yourself to check out his authentic Hong Kong work, where the stunts are jaw-dropping and the special effects, while not always perfectly realistic, are bursts of pure imagination. --Bret Fetzer

Editorial Review:

Two young men--Jun-Bo (Jet Li) and Chin-Bo (Chin Siu Ho)--were taken in as boys by the monks of the Shaolin Temple, the famous school for martial arts. Jun-Bo is thoughtful and kind, but is easily swayed to misbehavior by the bullying, rebellious Chin-Bo. Their disobedient ways finally get them evicted in disgrace (after a fight with the entire school), and they wander to a nearby town, where they meet two attractive women, Miss Li (Fannie Yuen) and Siu Lin (Michelle Yeoh, a.k.a. Michelle Khan), who are part of a rebel band fighting a corrupt overlord. Chin-Bo's lust for wealth and status leads him to join forces with the overlord. Chin-Bo's treachery drives Jun-Bo insane; Jun-Bo's gradual recovery leads him to develop the discipline of tai chi, with which he ultimately topples the overlord. This plot summary of Twin Warriors doesn't do the movie justice; hardly 10 minutes go by without another spectacular fight sequence--and one of the great things about Hong Kong action movies is that women can often fight as well as the men. Early on in the movie, Siu Lin is searching for her lost husband; when she finds him, she gets into a knock-down, drag-out fight with her husband's new wife. It's unfortunate that the English language script is poor; though the characters are broad and melodramatic, they don't have to be as goofy as the dubbing makes them. Even so, it's a strong outing for Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, two of Hong Kong's action superstars. --Bret Fetzer

2 stars for the story a 4.5 for the action, 5 stars for the stick fight and for jet li going off on EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This movie is really freaking weird. I am always surprised to see that this is most peoples favorite entry into the series, and while i would put it at # 3, it still rocks. The story yiou can really tell is just there so they could call it a movie. But watching jet li go off on like 30 people is really really cool. It is weird that they have clubfoot doing all the flip doubles for jet just like in the first movie, so when they fight eachother towards the end, you can see clubfoot doing the flips for himself and jet!!!!! It is really cool if you notice it.

And that brings me to a point I wanted to bring up. I have a huge problem with tsui hark, and even though OUATIC part 1 is one of the top 10 movie I have ever seen of any genre, he really limits some of his actors capabilities, at least when it comes to their martial arts abilities. Yuen biuo I think did one flip and had like 10 or 11 seconds to exchange blows with people. Xio Xio Xhiong???-very unsure of this spelling so i will just call him clubfoot. I have about 5 movies with him in it, and he is one of the best screen fighters I have ever seen. Why tsui hark decides to not show off all of his stuff really pisses me off. I mean jet looks good like he always does, better in fact, but why can't he make clubfoot look badass, I mean this guy is like the freaking horse of the first 2 rpojects, if they didn't have him the movie would have taken a hell of a lot longer and we may not have even had that spectacular ladder fight. So tsui hark finally gave him his chance in part 3 and he showed that he was the bleepin man, but we also found out that he has SUPERB acting skills. It is just too bad that part 3 really sucked, but if you take jat and clubfoot out of the mix, you would have had like a rosumand kwan lion dance or something, it would have been really weird, I don't know if it could have been worse, but it might have been more interesting. Go ahead and watch the whoel series and you will see that Hark is just a really hit and miss type director, I mean my god, look at jet li's the master, he's like , so i figured out in born to defence that I can't direct and now I figured out I can't produce either. And black mask 2, man tsui hark, i would be here all day if i named all of your bad stuff, but i would be here equally long if i was forced to name all of your good ones.

Also amazon lists this as 113 minutes and that is the full version. But I would suggest that you get the trilogy set, I got it used for 7.99, and would have piad like 30 bucks for the first 2, but the 3rd one is really only good for like backround music, YOU GOTTA LOVE THIS MUSIC, IT IS SERIOUSLY MY FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME. IT IS SUCH A NICE CHANGE FROM HEARIGN THAT SAME FREAKING STOCK MUSIC THAT WOO-PING AND JOSEOPH KUO AND EVERYBODY!!!! ELSE WOULD USE.

JUST SO YOU PEOPLE KNOW, THIS IS JAMES WONG WHO COMPOSED THIS AND UNFORTUNATELY HE PASSED ON A COUPLE YEARS AGO, BUT LEFT BEHIND A TRUE LEGACY. SO YOU GUYS AND GALS!! MAY REMEMBER HIM AS THE GOVERNER WITH LIKE 9 WIVES, NOT ONLY WAS HE A BRILLIANT ACTOR BUT A COMPOSER WHO OWNS THE TITLE OF MY FAVORITE SONG. AND IT IS PRETTY HARD TO RIVAL STUFF LIEK SABBATH AND HENDRIX AND JETHRO, SO I GOTTA GIVE IT UP TO THE LATE GREAT JAMES WONG.

ALSO LIKE I SAID EARLIER GET THE TRILOGY CAUSE IF THIS IS YOUR FAV IN THE SERIES, THEN YOU NEED THIS. PART 1 HAS DECENT SOUND AND EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT PICTURE AND AWESOME!!!!!! SUBTITLES. BUT THE SECOND DISC IN THE SET IS FAR SUPERIOR TO THE FIRST, IT HAS FREAKING BOOMING 5.1 SOUND AND STILL THE SAME GREAT PICTURE QUALITY. I GOTTA ADMIT THAT I LOVE TO HEAR DONNIES VOICE SO GET THIS IF YOU WANNA SEE THAT STICK FIGHT IN A PERFECTO WIDESREENED PRESENTATION.

Better than I expected 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I didnt have high expectations for this movie because the trailer made it seem like your run-of-the-mill action flick. I was able to see it a couple days ago and was pleasantly surprised.

Premise: Fait(DMX), a diamond thief plans an elaborate heist and steal what seems like black diamonds. A former CIA agent kidnaps Fait's daughter in exchange for the diamonds which are really plutonium devices used for war weapons. Fait teams up with Su(Jet Li), a hard-nosed Taiwanese intelligence agent to get his daughter back.

Opinion: The script is decent but I had to penalize it for a couple of things. The movie could do without Anthony Henderson playing a sissy to distract a front desk security officer(doesnt anybody get sick and tired of these black comics playing effeminate roles in movies?),DMX doing stunts on a quad is unbelievable and does Drag-On have to be in very movie involving DMX? Other than that this movie is not that bad. The action scenes are plentiful and contrary to popular belief DMX's acting is better here than he was in Belly. Jet Li is splendid as Su, the Taiwanees agent. Tom Arnold is kind of funny as the go-to-man for weapons and such. The brutally georgeous Gabrielle Union is okay in this movie but she can do much better. All in all the movie is worth a look

Editorial Review:

When his daughter is kidnapped and held in exchange for diamonds the leader of a crew of highly skilled urban thieves (DMX) forges an unlikely alliance with a Taiwanese Intelligence officer (Jet Li) to rescue her. Their race against the clock to find the precious stones ultimately unravels a plot to distribute a deadly new weapon of war.Running Time: 101 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE UPC: 085392329427 Manufacturer No: 23294

The Master = Bruce Lee! That's the Key! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This DVD The Master, with Jet Li, is wonderful. Admittedly it may initially disappoint, but this should only happen on first viewing. It is a movie that requires attention to detail (as all masterpieces do) and knowledge of other martial arts movies and legends. Nonetheless, after first viewing (during which time the proverbial penny should drop and deeper understanding commence), there are amazing viewing rewards! In fact, if you should ever want to show off your knowledge to others of the deeper purpose of martial arts and/or Jet Li, well, this is definitely THE movie to have!

First, though, to find the deeper story! So, to help the penny drop and to help find full appreciation of the consummate mastery of this Tsui Hark movie (especially its script), consider the possibility that the Master = Bruce Lee, the first internationally-recognized master of martial arts. On another level, to move closer to the story's higher purpose, consider the Master as the true spirit and/or reason for the practice of martial arts.

Second, consider the possibility that the movie is an extremely respectful criticism of the post-Bruce-Lee commercialism of martial arts (and the resultant use of martial arts in street violence).

Finally, consider the possibility that the martial arts people of the East saw a need to reinforce (via another master: Jet Li) the true spirit and/or reason of martial arts to the people of the West. This last point helps explain why the movie is set in modern-times and why it deliberately avoided the high-wire tricks; the movie is introducing to America the real martial arts mastery of Jet Li. In so doing, it is dealing with real social/cultural issues in a real way with a real and meaningful answer; for that answer watch the non-preaching and non-judgmental corrections to violence in this specific movie!

Now, to match the above viewing suggestions to the movie! The Master opens with the master as a doctor who is physically healing and attempting to mentally heal/warn/correct a macho streetfighter type. In fact, the movie actually links this doctor (via the Po Chi Lum herbal medicine shop) to Wong Fei-Hung. Wong Fei-Hung, you may recall, was the master from Once Upon A Time in China: an all-but-divine hero in Chinese martial arts history who was born in 1849 and who inherited a herbal medicine shop call Po Chi Lum, a shop where he also taught Kung Fu! The dimension and breadth of the movie should now start to tease sensibilities into a state of alertness! Jet Li, of course, had already starred as Wong Fei-Hung in earlier movies (and how!) but, because there is a higher purpose to this story than pure commerce-driven martial arts entertainment, Jet Li does not play the role he immortalized for cinema-goers. Instead, Jet Li plays one of this master's students! Why? Well, in brief, Jet Li is paying homage to the mastering spirits and legacy of martial arts. Why? Well, in brief, that's the lesson the West needs to re-learn; otherwise, the martial arts can be used for violence and destruction, not personal and community peace and safety.

At this point, consider the role that Jet Li plays in this movie: like his master, he is a healer (i.e. of the policemen's ulcers, which also suggests the authorities have not quite learned how to correct and stomach street violence! So, the movie has a social critique at work too! Truly, this story gathers to a giddying greatness the more it is meditated upon! It's great! Then, of course, Jet Li is a man of peace despite, and because of, his great martial arts skills. This is why he won't teach the Latino gang the martial arts (because they will use such skills violently for personal ends, not to help ensure personal and public peace; later in the story, Jet Li teaches them enough to protect themselves. This is a very fine edge of difference; but a critical difference! Jet Li is also a worldly innocent (as beautifully and humorously demonstrated by the one-sided romance).

Of course, all Jet Li's don't-call-me-master positive qualities are in sharp contrast to the call-me-master "bad" student's ego-driven mistakes (including the mistake of never having learned what the true purpose of martial arts actually is i.e. mastery over self and the resultant increasingly-perfected personal path to peace! So, as the bad student very capably shows, to challenge and/or kill a master = to lose directions to the true meaning of martial arts = to not be a master; regardless of physical prowess = to be killed by the self as a martial arts exponent). To become a true master (and, thus, find the invisible hands of non-terrestrial-power making you effortlessly invincible), this movie suggests, requires a full willingness to place martial arts in the service of humanity ....!

Actually, enough ... it is time to stop! It will take a book or two to explain this movie ... it is great! There are problems for viewers, certainly, because both before and after this specific movie, Jet Li starred in some of the most sublime action/martial arts movies in the history of world cinema; nevertheless, The Master is also an awesome achievement once the deeper story starts to become visible! Be patient with this movie, it will reward ... a masterpiece is patiently and respectfully waiting to speak to you! Be warned: when the glory of the story starts to gather momentum, your eyes will widen and smiles will arrive like a thousand chuckling sunrises! A masterpiece of reverence for life and community spirit has been scripted here and, as is clear from the fact that he doesn't play Wong Fei-Hung (the master), Jet Li clearly demonstrates his accord with the spiritual values offered by the infinitely disciplined, fully loving immortal heart of martial arts!

Editorial Review:

Fans of Jet Li should check out The Master, an early movie by the Hong Kong action star. Li is the anti-Stallone, all sinew and smile. His boyish grace makes him seem almost weightless as he whips through his fight scenes in peak physical form. Though the story isn't as strong as the Once upon a Time in China series or Fist of Legend--the plot, about a student of kung fu (Li) from China who comes to Los Angeles to help his former master, is serviceable but generic--the action scenes are dynamic and give ample room for Li's sprightly charisma. Everything about The Master is a little cliché, but at the same time it's all much more enjoyable than you'd expect. The editing is brisk, the actors are enjoying themselves, and the direction (by dependable Hong Kong auteur Tsui Hark) keeps things hopping. --Bret Fetzer

Editorial Review:

A distraught warrior (the charismatic Jet Li) forces his toddler son to choose between a sword and a wooden horse. If he chooses the sword, together they will fight the corrupt government that killed their family; if he chooses the horse, the warrior will send him to join his mother--in hell. Thus begins The New Legend of Shaolin, a wild Hong Kong fantasy. Though the opening sounds grim, the movie shifts ahead seven years and becomes increasingly comic as its plot unfolds. The story centers around a map tattooed on the backs of five boys; it leads to treasure from the Ming dynasty that a heroic sect hopes to use to reestablish the Shaolin temple, which the government destroyed. Meanwhile, Li is forced by poverty to become the bodyguard of a blowhard merchant, who doesn't realize that his bride-to-be is part of a mother-daughter team of notorious thieves. Meanwhile, a villain deformed by a poison that gives him invincible powers is hunting down the five boys, one of whom is the merchant's son... As is usually the case with Hong Kong cinema, the filmmakers have crammed in enough stuff to fill several ordinary movies. The exaggerated stoic conversations between Li and his 7-year-old son, both of them stone-faced and painfully serious, are extremely funny, as are the bizarre bits when the bride's mother masquerades as a ghost. And on top of all this are at least seven spectacular action sequences that are both comic and exciting. A prime example of the unique joys of Hong Kong pop culture. --Bret Fetzer

Kiss of the Dragon (Blu-Ray) 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen . It ranks up there with Godzilla 2000 ...

Great Blu Ray Quality! 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The moive itself is your standard low-budget, over the top action film. It has the usual plot and the usual action. I am not here to talk about the film, but the BD quality.

The BD quality is very good and pristine - for a single layer BD with DTS-HD MA! I see the specs on Amazon do not mention that! DTS-HD Master Audio is THE reason to get this disc! It is also the reason the price is so high.

The film is not bad, but if you were looking for a true martial arts film or a believable action film, this is not it. Jet Li had great promise, but most of his movies do not compare to his scenes in Lethal Weapon 4. It is something to watch, but not something to keep.

Editorial Review:

Luc Besson wrote and directed the stylish thrillers La Femme Nikita and The Professional; though he didn't direct Unleashed, the script has his trademark fusion of outrageous sentimentality and over-the-top violence. Hong Kong action superstar Jet Li (Romeo Must Die, Hero) stars as Danny, a man raised to be a brutal attack dog by a nasty gangster named Bart (Bob Hoskins, Mona Lisa)--when Bart removes Danny's collar, Danny pulverizes everyone in the room. But a chance encounter with a blind piano tuner (Morgan Freeman, Million Dollar Baby) reveals to Danny the possibility of a less brutal life, and when a retaliation attack gives him the chance to escape, he does--but Bart won't let him go that easily. The fighting in Unleashed is effectively jolting; Li and fight choreographer Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix) have purposefully stripped away the smoothness of most movie combat (especially with a genuine martial artist like Li) with raw, unnerving results, especially when juxtaposed with the sweet and earnest scenes of Li regaining his humanity with Freeman and his step-daughter (Kerry Condon). This freewheeling cocktail of bloody noses and ice-cream cones isn't for everyone, but fans of both Besson and Li will leave satisfied. --Bret Fetzer

Absolutely disagree!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

It's surprising that more people like Shaolin Temple than Martial Arts of Shaolin, aka The North and South Shaolin. But from my point of view, this movie reflects the young Jet Li's best characteristics. Everyone acts so naturally and beautifully in the movie. There is no other Jet Li's movie which is of such a high spirit--intrinsically funny yet simple!!

the best 4 out of 5 stars.

This is the best one out of all them, in the series. I'd give this 5 stars but the reason is that you can barely see the subtitles. But its a must see movie, i sorta understood anyway even though i could barely see the subtitles.

North and South Shaolin 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Now Amazon has reviews for the movie that I am reviewing-'North and South Shaolin' and a Jet Li Shaolin Temple movie. Now I can guarantee you that the 3 Jet Li 'Shaolin Temple' movies are great but this one is kind of a dud. I don't know why Amazon thinks these are the same movies but they ARE NOT.

Cassanova Wong stars as a young monk who has to take down the majorly underused kung fu superstar Eagle Han. Sadly Eagle is in Godfrey Ho form and the action director does not know how to use him properly. Cassanova on the other hand looks superb but does not get in near enough fighting. While the choreography is average at best, they speed up the film so much we can hardly see what the hell is going on in the fights.

The story is not really worth going over. Eagle Han(Han Ying) plays your standard government bad guy.

2 things that really stood out to me was the great training sequence with bamboo that Cassanova has and in the final fight you will see a couple of short action scenes that Donnie Yen ripped off for 'Legend of the Wolf'. Then this movie rips off that sweet kick that Cassanova does in the finale of 'Warriors Two'. Sadly the final fight is not great but the last 12 minutes are still worth a watch for any kung fu fan.

Picture quality from Video Asia is not very good but it is LETTERBOXED!!!!
