a must-see Jackie Chan masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Basically the 3rd movie in the Police Story series (First Strike is the 4th and last), Supercop has very little connections to the 1st 2 Poilce Story movies, which were very closely related. Jackie Chan returns as Kevin Chan, and his girlfriend Mei is still played by Maggie Cheung. I have seen Supercop numerous time, and each time its like watching it for the 1st. The story is better than many Chan films, and the action and stunts are easily amongst the best.

The story, takes itself a little more seriously than some Chan films, say compared to Mr. Nice Guy or Rumble in The Bronx. The humor is more of a minum because of that, but there's still a funny couple good moments. I think the plot is interesting and suspensful, taking advantage of Kevin Chan playing an undercover agent throughout the movie. His sidekick, or should I say boss, throughout the film is played by Michelle Yeoh, also undercover along side him, and gives an equally great performance in the film. The dubbing is far better than most films, and if you prefer Jackie Chan's own English voice, he provied his own dub in Supercop.

The action is used sparingly throughout the beginning of the film, making everything run a little slow. But the movie begins to progress more and more nicely throughout. The finale is huge. 15 minutes of straight all out action from fights to some of, if not, the best stunts ever done. Chan jums on and hangs from a helicopter ladder over the city, and Michelle Yeoh hangs off the side of a van for dear life and steers a motorcyle right up ontop a moving train. Its all real and its must see.

Fan or no fan of Jackie Chan, this is just an all out great movie. No its not recognized as a masterpiece, but in a slightly smaller world this is A++ entertainment.

The prequel to 'Master of the Flying Guillotine' 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Before Bruce Lee, there were a few kung fu movie stars. The first huge star was Jimmy Wang Yu who started working in the very first Shaw Brothers sword plays back in 1965. He directed and starred in 'One-Armed Boxer' for Golden Harvest in 1971 and is in top form both in front of and behind the camera. While you can clearly see Jimmy Wang Yu is not a real martial artist, he is still one of the best kung fu stars ever. At least 50 people die in this movie and he does the most damage.

The story is simple. A gang that is involved in opium smuggling and prostitution is looking to take out Wang Yu's kung fu school. When defeated, the gang hires Japanese fighters. Well, mostly Japanese. 2 Thai kickboxers, 2 Tibetan Lamas, a Yoga kung fu master(I never heard of Yoga kung fu, but hey, it's a movie), a Judo expert, a Taekwondo expert, and the unstoppable Lung Fei. Lung Fei also brings his 2 students, and obviously Wang Yu doesn't stand a chance against all of these guys. These are truly 10 of the craziest villains that you will ever come across. Wong Wing San played the Yoga guy with extendable arms in 'Master of the Flying Guillotine', but he just plays one of Lung Fei's 2 students in this. I will stop my review right now and let you find out for yourself how Wang Yu loses his arm and gets revenge.

If you are a fan of kung fu movies pre-Bruce Lee, this is a must have. Maybe the best basher ever. It's one of the movies that started the imaginary world where only martial arts schools exist. So the one martial arts school is a gang, and the other school is made up of good people. You just have to go with it, but it more than works. The movie is serious, but takes place in a complete fantasy world. "Never insult Tibetan martial arts".

There are too many good things to speak of when it comes to this movie. The great soundtrack, TONS of bloody fights (there is like 20 individual fights), Lung Fei's fangs, very creative training sequences, and best of all, Jimmy Wang Yu's acting. He was always the best at making me believe that he is in a really tough fight.

Overall, this is a one of a kind. They didn't make enough crazy movies like this that actually had good stories. A true classic in every way. 5/5

Red Sun version is widescreened with English and Cantonese languages. I don't know who they stole the print from.

Much Funner Than the Originals 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've long been a fan of Jackie's films. He breathed new life into the genre like no other with his humorous style of combat; and it's inspiring to still see him move like he does at his age. The action in The New Police Story were just as fun as most of his lighter films; and the stunts were typically incredible, just as you expect from a Hong Kong production that isn't stiffled by Hollywood politics and/or insurance. And despite the more dramatic seriousness of Police Story, with a little Drunken Master mixed in, I found myself laughing much more than I expected. Aside from a few sequences that demand a little further explanation, The New Police Story was about as much fun as my favorite Chan films. The only real disappointment of the Blu-ray was that Lionsgate didn't include a lossless track for the original language. A lossless audio option is provided for the dub track; but only lossy audio is included in the original Chinese. That said, since I had a guest that doesn't like reading her movies, I opted for the dubbed track when we watched it and was surprised at the fidelity. The translation was word-for-word the same as the subtitles in the approx 5 minute portion of the film I compared the two. And the harmonics sounded very natural and dynamic. That Jackie did (most) of the voice dub for his character himself, further helped to make sitting through the dubbed track, not only bearable, but enjoyable.

Welcome to the next generation of POLICE STORY! The once famous but now disgraced Inspector Chan (Jackie Chan) and his new rookie partner, Frank (Nicholas Tse), are headed towards an action-packed showdown with a sadistic punk gang. It’s a new breed of criminal for sure, but never count out an old pro when it comes to solving the twists...and using his fists!

a fun action flick 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

"Gen X Cops" isn't quite your average Hong Kong action movie, adopting instead the look of a low budget Hollywood summer flick. A trio of young cops with an attitude tail gangsters all while looking pretty damn cool at it. Jack (Nic Tse), Match (Stephen Fung), and Alien (alien-like Sam Lee) find themselves kicked out of police academy only to be picked up by Officer Chan (Eric Tsang), himself on the outs with his unsympathetic superiors. Chan wants their help on a dangerous undercover mission, one involving gang bosses, gang betrayals, and rocket fuel (??) They're joined by Y2K (Grace Yip) whose sole purpose it seems is to be the tough girl of the group. Everyone's got a little something to prove and set out to get a little respect. Balletic gunfights, questionable English, and the explosion of a Hong Kong landmark ensue.

The formulaic plot satisfies for the most part and makes sense in that action movie sort of way. Nothing is too over-the-top, equaling harmless fun for all. Clearly no one is taking themselves too seriously, and director Benny Chan was smart in throwing in a healthy dose of humor. The end result is a slick, satisfying 1 1/2 hour reality break.

The cast consists mostly of young talents but the older actors turn in some scene stealing performances as well. Francis Ng, who owns every role he takes, stands out as gang boss Lok. He possesses an intensity that keeps his character believable without giving into parody. (Beware Jackie Chan fans; he produced the movie and only appears for a one minute cameo at the end.)

The DVD extras won't disappoint either. In addition to the Coming Attractions, the Special Features include cast and credit info, a production diary, a film magic sequence exhibiting storyboards and special effects, a Making Of, additional footage, and trailers and TV spots. There are Cantonese and Mandarin language tracks with traditional, simplified, and English subtitles. There is also a great in-depth commentary (w/ subtitles) from the cast and crew. Unfortunately some of the special features do not have subtitles, though you won't miss much. Another drawback is the overall sound quality of the Cantonese track, which is uneven at best.

Jackie Chan takes on Abba 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As night follows day, box office smash hits will get their bigger-budgeted sequels. But while POLICE STORY 2 is bigger, it isn't necessarily better. It's actually a terrific film. I'm just saying it's not as good as the first. But it's definitely worth a look, especially if you haven't seen the 122 minute long version. If you've only seen the much edited international release, then you haven't seen the real thing. Either way, Jackie Chan is still singing that theme song.

For his reckless actions in the first POLICE STORY (demolishing a squatter village, wrecking a mall, holding the police superintendent hostage, etc.) Detective Chan Ka Kui (Jackie) of the Royal Hong Kong Police is demoted to traffic duty. But when the mob boss he had arrested (again from the first POLICE STORY) is released from prison - because apparently he only has three months left to live - Ka Kui and his girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung, getting more screen time) become targets of the mob boss's vengeance. But that's only one set of thugs. Ka Kui also ends up tangling with vicious bomb extortionists and taking on that tiny little formidable deaf-mute martial artist whose only mangled uttered words sound like "Abba, abba." Detective Chan Ka Kui persists in being a loose cannon, and I'm astonished that in the next sequel he isn't demoted to the permanent assignment of getting cats out of trees.

Jackie's trademark slapstick is toned down as his character maintains that incredible intensity for the most part. There are those running gags with the guy whose glasses kept getting cracked and also with Uncle Bill's toilet issues. Even more than the first movie - which to me sort of echoed the Dirty Harry flicks in tone - POLICE STORY 2 is immersed in the police procedural, to the extent that the middle third of the film tends to drag a bit. This is when Ka Kui joins the maverick Special Tactical Unit which specializes in undercover work. In the surveillance sequences, Jackie is relegated to a supervisory position. At times, he's not even in the heat of the action.

Seems to me that Jackie Chan has a misstep only when he wanders across the pond into Hollywood. Part of it is culture, part of it is that in Hollywood Jackie doesn't have as much say in the film-making process, and that's cost him. In the confines of Hong Kong, Jackie Chan is the absolute master of his domain, and he knows his public. In Hong Kong he gives the people what they want. Not as good as the first, POLICE STORY 2 still contains moments which blow the roof off.

Jackie Chan tried to top himself in this one. The first POLICE STORY was noted for the sheer amount of glass shattered. One of this sequel's calling cards is the number of explosions. For the final bang at the abandoned factory, Jackie, wanting it to be as memorable as he can get it, hired the best Hollywood pyrotechnics crew to stage the effects. At the time, for a Hong Kong flick, the result was impressive. The fight scenes are predictably awesome, and Jackie and the goons he takes on look convincing trading punches, and the full contact stuff looks like it hurts. If you go by the DVD's bonus segment featuring the stunt crew, it really did hurt. Maggie Cheung was injured in the head while running thru a series of falling steel frames, and if you notice, from then on, after that stunt, a body double plays May and you never do get another close-up shot of her. The best action sequence is the skirmish at the park playground, although the one in the restaurant isn't at all shabby. I also dig the sexy cop girl unit and the not exactly genteel method the girls apply in questioning the suspect.

The Dragon Dynasty's DVD release has the following special features: audio commentary by RUSH HOUR director Brett Ratner and Hong Kong cinema expert Bey Logan, a Brit who knows more Hong Kong action cinema trivia than perhaps any sane man should; "Celebrating the Sequel": a conversation with Brett Ratner and Bey Logan (00:08:25 minutes); rare alternative outtakes (00:03:15); POLICE STORY 2 Location Guide - Bey Logan walks us thru a tour of location scenes from the film (00:12:18); "Stunts Unlimited": members of Jackie Chan's famous stunt team talk about performing the crazy stunts for the film, and they manage to convey a sense of just how hard and dangerous their job is (00:33:32, with English sub-titles); and the Hong Kong theatrical trailer and the US promotional trailer.

Editorial Review:

(Martial Arts/Foreign) The explosive sequel to Jackie Chan’s groundbreaking original, Police Story 2 is famous internationally for some of the most daring and inventive stunt sequences ever committed to film. Despite his success at apprehending criminals, Kevin Chan's unorthadox approach to his work as a police officer sees him demoted to the traffic branch. Despite this, the man he put behind bars is now out of prison, and has vowed to make his life a misery.

Editorial Review:

Something a bit different from the team of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, Heart of Dragon has action scenes and comedy, but also tells the dramatic tale of two brothers who are torn between duty and dreams. Tat Fung (Chan) has recently left a S.W.A.T.-type agency for the local police force to take care of his mentally disabled older brother Do-do (Hung). Although Do-do is a full grown man, he has the mental capacity of a young child and is always getting into mischief. Tat has put away his dreams of marriage and traveling the world as a sailor to watch after Do-do. While playing cops and robbers with his kid friends, Do-do gets mixed up in a jewelry heist and is kidnapped by the bad guys. Tat momentarily puts aside his official law-enforcer status and takes matters into his own hands, which results in serious repercussions. The fight sequences in Heart of Dragon are closer to such American films as Die Hard; Tat and his S.W.A.T.-team buddies take on the bad guys in an unfinished building with zero comedy and lots of bloodshed. At a crucial impasse in the story Tat lashes out at Do-do, and this poignant scene perfectly illustrates the frustrations of a man who loves and hates his brother at the same time. It's a switch from the usual fare, and Heart of Dragon offers ample proof that Chan and Hung can handle dramatic material. --Shannon Gee

FURIOUS KUNG FU FUN! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'll start by saying that House of Fury is a very fun movie with some really great action. If you like kung fu movies with good fights and a decent plot, you should enjoy this movie greatly. I rented this movie when it first came out on DVD a while back. It must have not made a very good first impression on me because I didn't buy it. But recently I decided to go ahead and pick it up, and I must say I am very happy I did. This movie was a lot better than I remember it being the first time I watched it. For some reason I remembered the story being a little slow and short on action. WRONG! This flick totally kicks butt! I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. The main villain is a little lame, but the kid playing his son is awesome with a bo staff, so I can overlook a little wooden acting. All-in-all I give this one two thumbs up!!! Check it out, you won't be sorry.

Bad sound quality - Get the Chan Pack instead 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Mine came cracked. It still worked, but the sound is low bad that when you play it on the laptop you can barely make out what's being said. Thank God it was cracked because I was able to return it and instead got the Extreme Chan Action Pack - Mr. Nice Guy, Rumble in the Bronx, and Jackie Chan's First Strike. This one was WAY better, and it is much cooler to have all the movies in a single DVD - with much better sound quality. THe movies are amazingly great and the price for the extreme chan pack is good. This double feature dvd is kind of blah.

DVD double feature - Fullscreen only 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a single disc set, with both movies on the same side of the disc. I'm giving it three stars because this is only the fullscreen versions, otherwise it would be a 4. Jackie Chan's First Strike used to be my favorite Jackie Chan movie about ten years ago. Mr. Nice Guy is a decent movie although not as good as First Strike. This is a good buy if your a Jackie Chan fan and widescreen isn't to important to you.

Oh, and if your new to the older Jackie movies and wondering why some actors look like they're speaking English and others appear to be dubbed, it's because some of the actors spoke their native language and others did not. That way anyone could be cast in a role, knowing they would be dubbed later. So there is no original language audio track for alot of Jackie's movies because the dubbed version kind of is the original version.

Jackie's first american movie 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Jackie's first attempt to break into the American market, his english is not the best in this movie. The action is horrid- very slow and choppy- not the typical action you'd expect from Jackie. Clearly, the American director and stunt choreographers were not familiar with Jackie's abilities and style, and the film suffers because of it. Well, that and the fact that the plot is really flat and stupid. It is fun to watch Jackie on roller skates, though, and if you are a huge fan this movie is worth at least one viewing.
