SIMPLE, ELEGANT MIX OF CHINESE PHILOSOPHY, INCREDIBLE UNSPOILED SCENERY AND ACTION 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

In the first ten minutes I thought it was just okay;
then it did nothing but get better for the next 177 minutes. Director King Hu was a visionary;no wonder so many contemporary movies have explicitly and liberally lifted his ideas.

Unlike so many martial arts' movies, character reigns;
the plot is intricate, evolving and and motivates the action.
And the natural locations make me want to take a very long walk around China. A feeling of reality and naturalness prevails in every scene.

If you buy this, and you should, read the bio of King Hu Jing-Chaun; amazing what he's done and the lasting impact of his work. His genius really shines in Touch of Zen.

One of the Time Magazine Top 100 Films 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Included in the Time Magazine Best 100 Films of all time list, A Touch of Zen does not disappoint. Though it starts slowly, the momentum gradually increases until the viewer is completely caught up in the story of a refugee woman who seeks the help of two generals, disguised as common townfolk (one a blind man, the other a doctor), and a group of monks led by an abbot whose spiritual strength is expressed in his ability to thwart violence and defeat evil based on deflecting the advances of his enemy and using that deflection to repel whoever attacks.

This mystical bent is strong in the film and lends it some real juice. Also on hand is a poor artist who lives with his mother, a spy who wishes the artist to draw his portrait, the evil eunuch Hsu, a whole bunch of guards/soldiers in service to both Hsu and his "boss" Wei (the equally evil ruler), Mun-Ta (another bad guy), the town magistrate, and, of course, the artist's mother who's on hand for comic relief and as well to provide a touch of humanism to A Touch of Zen. The bad guys had previously tortured and murdered the refugee woman's father and are now out to finish her off, as well as the two generals who have sided with her.

A clear inspiration for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon--as many others have noted--this film boasts quite a few martial arts fights (mainly with swords) and quite a few flying leaps. It's also nice to see that a good looking woman, the refugee, is so adept at martial arts herself--women's lib had apparently hit China before it got to the US!!

This is a three hour film, broken into two parts, so there is actually an opening credit sequence for the second part of the film exactly like the first part sequence and a short (two-minute) recap of the last scene from the first part at the beginning of the second part. In addition, the image is somewhat muddy at times. In spite of these drawbacks (hence the four stars instead of five), this deservedly is part of the Time Magazine Top 100 Film List; it's a gripping story with great visuals and nary a false note anywhere.

Highly recommended.

Maybe not Chan's best, but a truly fun film nonetheless 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When it comes to the career of Jackie Chan as far as his films and stunts go Mr. Nice Guy won't be one of the first brought up; Chan has made a career out of amazing fight scenes and some of the most dangerous stunts ever seen on film. In my opinion Jackie Chan just might be the greatest action star of all time. Chan really raised the bar for action sequences and nobody has really ever managed to top him.

The thing about Jackie Chan even if you view some of his 80s movies like even Police Story you can clearly see the Hollywood influence and Mr. Nice Guy was clearly aimed at an American audience. This movie does have that B-grade feel, but its Chan's fighting and stunts that raise the movie above the normal B-Flick. Here in Mr. Nice Guy it seems to be a more slightly toned down Jackie Chan or just maybe it's just damn near impossible to top some of his earlier work. Regardless of which it is this isn't gonna make the Jackie Chan highlight reel, but it's still filled with some great fight scenes and some great stunts.

The screenplay by Fibe Ma & Edward Tang is what it is; look nobody really goes into a Jackie Chan movie for the script. We watch his flicks for the fights and stunts. The script by Ma & Tang is good in the sense it's never boring, but the plot is very thin and actually as the movie goes on its quite easy to even forget how this whole thing started. The characters though are mostly likeable and the villains are silly fun. The script is weak, but I suppose it serves its purpose.

Mr. Nice Guy was directed by Sammo Hung who has appeared in many of these kinds of flicks and should be best known to American audiences from the TV series Martial Law; Sammo's directing is fairly good; the movie is well paced and there really isn't a slow moment at all. The action starts off quick and its non-stop. Most of the running time is filled with action and any breaks are very brief. This isn't one of the great martial arts movies and does feel too American in structure, but Sammo Hung does a good job in the sense the movie is never boring.

The performances are decent from the cast with Chan being the best of the lot. But like we don't see these movies for the script we also don't really watch them for the acting. Jackie Chan really isn't a bad actor he's actually fairly good and while I'm a big fan of his work I would love to see him with better material from a writing stance. Miki Lee as Miki is just so cute and fun to watch and her scenes with Chan are highly entertaining.

Like I said before most of the running time of Mr. Nice Guy is packed with action and while these may not be the best of Chan's career they are still excellent and thrilling to watch. While Mr. Nice Guy isn't quite a 4-star movie and it really is very much an American B-Movie, I still rate it 4-stars for the simple fact Mr. Nice Guy is just so entertaining; from the get go until the closing shot this movie is never once boring and will keep a smile planted on the viewers face. Don't go in expecting classic Jackie Chan just sit back and enjoy the ride.

A great movie, but a very poor DVD 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Jackie Chan's hugely enjoyable romp Operation Condor - Armour of God 2 sees him on the trail of Nazi gold in the desert in a plot that's no more than an excuse for several spectacular stunts - and this contains some of Chan's most impressive stuntwork. His most expensive HK picture, it's also one of his most enjoyable in its uncut version, but sadly this Miramax/Dimension version has typically cut 14 minutes from the Hong Kong version (the US theatrical version actually cut 26 minutes!). It ain't art, but it is fun, and some of the stunts in the massive underground set have to be seen to be disbelieved.

Unfortunately, this a disappointing DVD all round. It's not just that UK label Hong Kong Legends' excellent Hong Kong DVDs have raised the bar in terms of extras and picture quality, this Dimension release is the dubbed and heavily edited US cut. The UK PAL release is uncut, but sadly dubbed and not the best of transfers. A budget title in every sense of the word, you're much better off sticking to the Hong Kong releases.

Editorial Review:

Get ready for Jackie Chan's most spectacular adventure ever -- starring and directed by Chan himself! Risking everything and performing all his own death-defying stunts, Chan ignites the big screen as the world's greatest secret agent, code name Condor. Sent to track down stolen Nazi gold buried beneath the Sahara, Condor is pursued by a ruthless band of treasure-hunting terrorists. With the help of three sexy sidekicks, Jackie takes off on a globe-spanning chase ... in an incredible quest to reach the hidden bounty first! It's going to be an action-packed fight right up to the explosive climax ... and you won't want to miss one minute of the thrills!

Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan... You Bak Guis didn't get it, did you? This was a Sammo Hung movie and if you were brought up in the 60's, 70's and 80's with the genre you would know that not all Chinese movies are about Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan... I am a Jackie Chan fan but I can open my mind to other types of these movies and enjoy the heck out of them.
This movie paid tribute to many of the kung fu fighting movies by making a farce of the fighting. Did you guys hear the tribute to Wong Fei Hung. Oh, sorry... Who's Wong Fei Hung?
Pick it up, sit down, shut up and enjoy the ride. You'll love this movie.

Five Lucky Stars 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Winners and Sinners (aka Five Lucky Stars) is a film that I liked better the second time I watched it. After shaken off all expectations of a "Jackie and Sammo" film and accepted the uneven and scattered nature of this ensemble movie I enjoyed it more. This movie was more important though when it came out then it is considered today. Jackie had a recent flop in Dragon Lord, though I did enjoy the movie, and Golden Harvest had been in a bit of a slump. Producer Leonard Ho got the idea from Cannonball Run (which Jackie Chan and Michael Hui had parts in) to create an assemblage of popular Hong Kong stars to star in this film. Winners and Sinners was a success spawning several sequels and reunited Jackie with Seven Little Fortune alums Sammo and Yuen Biao (who helped with martial art choreography; though his cameo as a fellow CID officer is less than a minute as a quick fight versus Jackie.)

The Five Lucky Stars are cons who after spending their time in jail take a straight job with a cleaning company led by Curly aka Jack So (played by real life democracy advocate John Shum) who was framed for instigating a crowd to do harm in a parody of his real-life exhorts. The other four are Ranks aka Larry (Stanley Fung), Teapot (Sammo Hung who also directed this) as a cat burglar, Vaseline (Charlie Chin) a slick thief, and Exhaust Pipe (Richard Ng who performance was nominated as Best Actor for the Hong Kong Film Awards) who is bad at thieving automobile parts. They all live with Jack's sister known as Sis (Cherie Chung.) Unfortunately they spend way too much time trying to get her attention, leaving a lull in the early parts of the film. However there are some great gags such as Richard Ng thinking he is invisible with Wu Ma's great response to shatter his misconception - "...pretty good vision even when it comes to small objects" and a blind couple playing a Rod Stewart song at a carnival.

There are some great stunt and fight scenes led by 7086 (Jackie Chan) a bumbling CID officer who beats up wrong suspects, kills his superior's turtle and accidentally throws a kid's ice cream away. When he is not destroying everything in his path he is part of an awesome stunt scene involving skates (at least he learned something good from The Big Brawl though he is doubled on some of the trickier roller tricks) and part of a good fight scene in a cafeteria with a little person with horrific teeth. The "ouch factor" is quite high in one scene where a villain gets kicked out of a window and lands on a concrete ledge than falls to the ground. I have the highest respect for these stuntmen who kill themselves for our enjoyment. This film definitely deserved the Hong Kong award for best Action Choreography.

The story is mostly non-existent until the boilerplate briefcase full of counterfeit bills makes it's appearance. It belongs to Chan Chiu (James Tien always good as a cigar chomping villain) who is head of a triad gang. He was going to trade it to another triad gang led by Ho Man but it got intercepted and eventually and unknowingly in the possession of the Five Lucky Stars Cleaning Company. Of course, Agent 7086 wants this briefcase too.

But this film was not made for the plot. It was made to be a crowd pleasing mixture of comedy and action, both of which it does very well. It parodies the more serious films with scenes such as Charlie Chin and Fung Hark On doing a martial art pose-down fight and the final action scene that blends comedy and stunts takes place in a warehouse which gets me thinking on how many films I have seen that have the last fight scene in a warehouse (rhetorical thought of course). There are some problems with the film besides the inert beginning including he abysmal electronic soundtrack that is eerily reminiscent of Heart of Dragon's soundtrack and the misuse of Lam Ching Ying as Chan's butler Chan. Overall this is an enjoyable film that is fun to watch that showcases several outstanding Hong Kong comedians and several outstanding action performers.

Fun 007 Spoof! 4 out of 5 stars.

This is not one the best stories you will ever find in a Chan movie but it has some of the best and funniest moments i have ever seen in his movies the classic ladder scene is my second favorite fight scene ever made ,the first being a tie betwenn the axe gang and final fights in drunken mast II, also the underwater kung-fu is great there are also some funny 007ish moments like the whole snow mobile ski scene also the fsb agents so in all this is a good fun movie!

"i will follow you" 5 out of 5 stars.

As many of you Jackie Chan fans may already know (and those who aren't fans are about to find out), Chan has his own uniqueness that makes him one of a kind. One of the elements about his action films that makes Jackie Chan, "Jackie Chan", is the humor. In "Jackie Chan's First Strike" we get to see some humor, but what there is more of is just pure fun. Where most of the fun lies, is in some of the coolest action scenes in any Chan film.

First Strike is basically part 4 in the popular Police Story series, arguably the best series of movies with Chan. Police Story 1 & 2 had a decent amount of comedy, but also a lot of seriousness. Supercop was quite serious. First Strike is the most fun out of the bunch, but has its serious moments too. As mentioned earlier, its the action that is so much fun. Plenty of scenes from beginning to end that will surely thrill from a great ski/snowboarding scene in the beginning, chases & fights, the incredible & famous "ladder fight" scene, and the incredible fun and somewhat humerous aquarium underwater scene.

The plot in First Strike is actually not all that dull, but might seem a little common for a Chan film. Jackie is hunting down some people who are dealing with nuclear weapons, and ends up working on the wrong side by mistake. The action picks up in the movie when he discovers he was working for the bad guys, he's a wanted man, and they begin to come after him. The English dubbing, though not great, is satisfying for a Chan film, actually helping in bringing out the fun factor.

Arguably the best scene in the movie, and of the best Jackie Chan scenes ever, is the famous ladder scene (although the particular fight is not limited to just a ladder). It is truly amazing to see what can become a weapon and how he uses them with such incredible choreography that is intelligently used to make a simple brawl just an outright blast. The honorable mention scene is the finale, which is an underwater fight at an aquarium. Chan provides some cool underwater martial arts action at times, as well as plenty of comic relief when attempting to avade the shark in the aquarium. There is no big stunt scene like in some of his other movies, but the biggest are jumping from a cliff onto a helicopter and taking a red sprts car off a ramp and into a movie boat.

For a Jackie Chan fan, this is a must for the collection. First Strike is just an all-out fun film that anyone can enjoy, and most likely will. Oh yeah, and there is a scene where he is forced to sing naked outside "I will follow you..." Just hilarious.

This "DVD" did not work in my DVD player. It worked only on my computer's DVD drive. Disc looked different on the side that is read, different than a normal DVD. Annoying. The movie was in high enough visual quality to watch the fight scenes. Maybe the more expensive DVD of this film can be played on ALL name-brand DVD players.

Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.

Im a spoiled fan of Chan in Western flicks, and was expecting more of the same. Wrong. The characters and plot were sophomoric and mostly a clumsy attempt at Three-Stooges type comedy. Example - when not in their black "uniform," the scowling bad Ninjas appear in 50's style zoot-suits and broad-brimmed hats (except the sexy female baddie). The two main fight scenes (very early, and at the end) totaled about 10-15" and were classic Chan. Otherwise, a much better investment of time and bucks is Li's "Fearless."

Different Chan 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The great, unbeatable, real life actionman Jackie Chan is ageing. This of course is not new or shocking information, but it is true. Therefore he has shifted focus a bit in his new film, "Robin B Hood" (for which the English name in China interestingly enough was 'Rob-B-Hood', which to my ears at least sounds a bit better). Although he still fights and leaps and such, it is no longer the main act. The comedy takes over, and I must say, quite succesfully.

There is one big problem with this though. While action and leaping around is universally understood, humour varies from one end of the world to another, and I think that there is a bit of that going on here. If you understand Chinese and Chinese culture and or cinema history, you will probably see more funny things in this film than if you don't. There are still plenty of things that are easily recognized as humourous, but many of the references and a lot of the dialogue is better if you speak Chinese. Nothing surprising about that really.

I think there are enough leaping and figthing (and a visit from Yuan Biao) to keep genre fans happy, and enough humour to keep anyone else satisfied. In short: I think it is a good film. Highly recommendable.

The Weird the Bad and the Ugly 2 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

These are five of the worst movies I have ever seen.

The only one worth the plastic it is encoded on is Master with Cracked Fingers. Even that contains scenes blatently chopped from Drunken Master (a true Chan classic), and for the grand finale Jackie has mysteriously disappeared, replaced by a barely adequate stand-in.

In Young Tiger, Jackie is miscast in an uncomfortable bad-guy role with a horrible, hairy mole on his cheek.

Fantasy Mission Force is just plain bizarre, with Chan appearing only occassionally. At least when he does show up, he's in classic Jackie Chan form. This is in stark contrast to his unfortunate roles in Young Tiger and Eagle Shadow Fist.

Eagle Shadow Fist is a fairly standard kung fu flick...in which Jackie is killed off in the first half of the movie. I can't comment on the rest of the movie because I turned it off after that.

Fire Dragon is, perhaps, the worst of all. It isn't even its own movie, it is a hacked up, alternate version of Fantasy Mission Force. Many scenes were blatantly chopped from Fantasy Mission Force and dropped awkwardly into Fire Dragon, overdubbed with completely different English dialogue. Weird! Fantasy Mission Force was bizarre to begin with, but hacked up and rearranged into Fire Dragon, it is completely baffling.

The only way I could recommend anybody to ever purchase this set of films, is if you really want to own five of the worst movies you'll ever see. Fantasy Mission Force, and its hacked up sibling, Fire Dragon, are so incredibly strange and awful, they're almost worth watching on that basis alone. Master with Cracked Fingers has its moments, but is ultimately disappointing on several levels (not the least of which is Jackie's absence in the big finale). Eagle Shadow Fist and Young Tiger might be tolerable for their genres, but certainly not for Jackie Chan fans.

Do not buy this set expecting to see the Jackie Chan we all know and love, or you will be bitterly disappointed. If you are looking for classic, early Jackie Chan, I highly recommend Drunken Master.

a fun action flick 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

"Gen X Cops" isn't quite your average Hong Kong action movie, adopting instead the look of a low budget Hollywood summer flick. A trio of young cops with an attitude tail gangsters all while looking pretty damn cool at it. Jack (Nic Tse), Match (Stephen Fung), and Alien (alien-like Sam Lee) find themselves kicked out of police academy only to be picked up by Officer Chan (Eric Tsang), himself on the outs with his unsympathetic superiors. Chan wants their help on a dangerous undercover mission, one involving gang bosses, gang betrayals, and rocket fuel (??) They're joined by Y2K (Grace Yip) whose sole purpose it seems is to be the tough girl of the group. Everyone's got a little something to prove and set out to get a little respect. Balletic gunfights, questionable English, and the explosion of a Hong Kong landmark ensue.

The formulaic plot satisfies for the most part and makes sense in that action movie sort of way. Nothing is too over-the-top, equaling harmless fun for all. Clearly no one is taking themselves too seriously, and director Benny Chan was smart in throwing in a healthy dose of humor. The end result is a slick, satisfying 1 1/2 hour reality break.

The cast consists mostly of young talents but the older actors turn in some scene stealing performances as well. Francis Ng, who owns every role he takes, stands out as gang boss Lok. He possesses an intensity that keeps his character believable without giving into parody. (Beware Jackie Chan fans; he produced the movie and only appears for a one minute cameo at the end.)

The DVD extras won't disappoint either. In addition to the Coming Attractions, the Special Features include cast and credit info, a production diary, a film magic sequence exhibiting storyboards and special effects, a Making Of, additional footage, and trailers and TV spots. There are Cantonese and Mandarin language tracks with traditional, simplified, and English subtitles. There is also a great in-depth commentary (w/ subtitles) from the cast and crew. Unfortunately some of the special features do not have subtitles, though you won't miss much. Another drawback is the overall sound quality of the Cantonese track, which is uneven at best.

ORIGINAL IS WAAY BETTER~! 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 14 people found this review helpful.

If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting Jackie Chan's movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way ENTIRE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL

Editorial Review:

In Jackie Chan's first American movie, Chan and Danny Aiello (Do the Right Thing, Moonstruck) are cops who don't play by the rules. They're sent to Hong Kong to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a wealthy New York scumbag who's mixed up with an insidious heroin kingpin; to investigate, they go to a massage parlor, where the women try to kill them in the middle of providing sexual favors. It's not surprising that the gunplay is mundane, but even Chan's fight sequences are banal and unsurprising. The only entertainment value comes from absurdities, like a band of carjackers dressed like Adam and the Ants, or a sequence where it's revealed that the smuggled heroin is stashed inside of melons--and the stashing process is, inexplicably, performed by naked women. Jackie also swears; apparently the director thought he was making a Dirty Harry movie. An embarrassment. --Bret Fetzer
