Much Funner Than the Originals 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've long been a fan of Jackie's films. He breathed new life into the genre like no other with his humorous style of combat; and it's inspiring to still see him move like he does at his age. The action in The New Police Story were just as fun as most of his lighter films; and the stunts were typically incredible, just as you expect from a Hong Kong production that isn't stiffled by Hollywood politics and/or insurance. And despite the more dramatic seriousness of Police Story, with a little Drunken Master mixed in, I found myself laughing much more than I expected. Aside from a few sequences that demand a little further explanation, The New Police Story was about as much fun as my favorite Chan films. The only real disappointment of the Blu-ray was that Lionsgate didn't include a lossless track for the original language. A lossless audio option is provided for the dub track; but only lossy audio is included in the original Chinese. That said, since I had a guest that doesn't like reading her movies, I opted for the dubbed track when we watched it and was surprised at the fidelity. The translation was word-for-word the same as the subtitles in the approx 5 minute portion of the film I compared the two. And the harmonics sounded very natural and dynamic. That Jackie did (most) of the voice dub for his character himself, further helped to make sitting through the dubbed track, not only bearable, but enjoyable.

Inspector Wing of the Hong Kong Police Force has become the victim of a gang, led by the evil Joe. When his entire team is killed, Wing becomes a hapless drunk, feeling guilty for the deaths of his team. It is up to a young rookie officer to get Wing back on his feet and begin an adventure to get revenge on the evil Joe and his Gang of Five, especially when it becomes personal.

Editorial Review:

Master filmmaker Quentin Tarantino presents HERO -- starring martial arts legend Jet Li. This standout Special Edition, remastered and including an exciting new bonus feature, is a visually stunning epic where a fearless warrior rises up to defy an empire and unite a nation. With supernatural skill -- and no fear -- a nameless soldier (Jet Li) embarks on a mission of revenge against the fearsome army that massacred his people. Now, to achieve the justice he seeks, he must take on the empire's most ruthless assassins and reach the enemy he has sworn to defeat. Acclaimed by critics and honored with numerous awards, HERO was an Oscar(R) (Best Foreign Language Film, 2002) and Golden Globe nominee.

With sensational, nonstop martial arts excitement supplied by the acclaimed choreographer of THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, IRON MONKEY is the spirited tale of a mysterious and mythical Chinese legend -- now with pristine picture and theater-quality sound on Blu-ray Disc. In a desperate and unjust land, where government corruption rules the day, only one man -- known as the Iron Monkey -- has the courage to challenge the system and fight back. Under the shadow of night, in the silence before dawn, he fights to give hope to the poor and the oppressed. Although no one knows his name or where he comes from, his heroism makes him a living legend to the people -- and a wanted man to the powers that be. Presented by Quentin Tarantino -- it's the exhilarating action adventure critics everywhere have called one of the greatest martial arts films of all time

The action legend himself -- Jackie Chan (SHANGHAI NOON, RUSH HOUR) -- explodes across the screen on Blu-ray Disc in a power-packed adventure that critics agree captures some of the most incredible action stunts ever. when the British government is discovered smuggling precious Chinese artifacts out of the country, folklore hero Wong Fei Hung (Chan) uses his uniquely outlandish style of martial arts -- Drunken Boxing -- to fight the conspirators and salvage the valuables before it's too late. And the more Hung drinks, the more agile he becomes -- able to fend off numerous attacks with unbelievable moves. With Chinese treasures and family pride on the line, Hung steps up to every challenge. It's a fun and unstoppably entertaining hit in Blu-rayHigh Definition.

Inventive and bold, this film shines with pristine picture and theater-quality sound on Blu-ray Disc. In an empire ruled by fear, the people's only hope is the ultimate weapon: Zatoichi (Takeshi Kitano) -- a blind, nomadic samurai whose sword has made him a hero and whose courage has made him a legend. Determined to help the desperate residents of a village, Zatoichi seeks justice through revenge. It's a wildly entertaining film that's even more brilliant in Blu-ray High Definition

Fun idea, mediocre movie. 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Bad US dub aside (and they really should start releasing these films uncut and in their original language tracks), Twin Dragons has an interesting premise but rather shoddy execution. Through the use of various camera tricks and body-doubles, Jackie Chan plays a set of twins seperated at birth. One becomes a famous concert pianist, the other a streetwise mechanic. The trouble begins when the musical brother returns to Hong Kong for a concert, and the twins start sharing each others actions through a psychic link.

For my money, there wasn't enough of the twins interacting in the same frame, and too much of the typical 'mistaken identity' goofing associated with these stories. The effects used to make two Jackie Chans appear onscreen together are quite convincing, but the story resorts to the "one twin ducks out while the other comes in" device too often, sapping away the fun. The confusion with the two girlfriends is entertaining but ultimately overplayed, and even some of the scenes in the final car-testing area could've been cut (particularly the goofing in the heat/water rooms). My desire for a trimmer cut doesnt excuse the US version's butchering, however.

Really, Twin Dragons is worth 2.5 stars, but the sub-par US dvd keeps me from rounding up. It's worth checking out to see the fights, sunts, and some of the visual tricks, and those alone will probably make this movie memorable to fans. But objectively, it's not one of Jackie Chan's better efforts.

Editorial Review:

The world's greatest action hero, Jackie Chan (RUSH HOUR 1&2, RUMBLE IN THE BRONX), delivers twice the excitement and twice the fun in this nonstop, stunt-filled comedy thriller! Jackie plays Boomer, a streetwise martial arts expert living in Hong Kong and his long-lost twin brother, John, a classical musician from New York! They've never met ... but when John travels to Hong Kong to give a concert, these total-opposite identical brothers become unwittingly mixed up in a hilarious case of mistaken identity! With hard-hitting martial arts thrills and endless comedy hijinks, TWIN DRAGONS packs everything you've come to love about the wildly popular movies of stuntmaster Jackie Chan.

this move was so nice, a comedy and action film. jacky (kong sang) chan has a small part, put that does not really matter.

Pretty entertaining 4 out of 5 stars.

This movie is pretty entertaining. Although Jackie Chan is on the cover, his appearance in the movie is minimal. I got a good laugh from the goofieness of it all. I would recommend this movie if you like goofy movies.

Superb popcorn flick. 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a fantastic slice of non-stop, high octane, martial-arts, comedy horror thriller in the vein of Van Helsing and Underworld and even the Blade movies. It's a film that entertains and doesn't take itself too seriously. And if, like me, you thought Underworld and Van Helsing were great concepts ruined by poor execution then look no further for how this kind of film should be done.

Of course the plot doesn't bear scrutiny; something about a European vampire killing off vampire royalty to collect their blood in order to open an ancient and sacred book that grants a vampire daylight immortality (!) Nice. And continuity's dubious; at the start of the film our hero and his sidekick have trouble fighting off 10 vampires by the end vamps are being despatched in the dozens and our two heroines (KPop stars and both excellent to boot (Imagine Atomic Kitten doing Ultraviolet. It just wouldn't work!)) have strength and endurance beyond their perfectly formed but still small and dainty frames.

But none of this detracts from the overall experience. The fight scenes are fast and furious and, yes, over-the-top, with some superb CGI/wire work interplay. The comedy includes direct parodies of more famous films along with plenty of inter-character rivalries. The first meeting and subsequent fight between the two female leads is hilarious. The actors themselves also appear to be having a ball and their enthusiasm's infectious. So long as you've checked your brain out at the start you'll be hollering along in joy. The vampires are also wonderfully characterised. The Royal Prince living in his hi-tech coffin refusing to lower himself to actually sucking blood: He'll have his decanted by a servant, thank-you-very-much! And the way they move is captured perfectly; exactly how I envisioned Count Dracula in Stoker's novel: like a malevolent Spiderman!

It's also worth noting that Charlene Choi is some of the prettiest Asian eye candy around :o)

And it's got Jackie Chan in it.

So in conclusion, it's a must. I can't think of a better way to waste an hour and a half and I'm pretty sure this film will be taking several more hours off my life. Not that I mind in the slightest. It's so enjoyable I've even ordered its two sequels, sight unseen!

Mr. Nice Guy and First Strike are both excellent movies to watch and get at [local store] if you can't get it here!

This action pack could contain Shanghai Noon instead of Rumble in the Bronx. Opt-out for Rumble in the Bronx since it is Hong Kong style...meaning you will have to deal with foreign language spoken while someone in English interprets. Kind of weird if you ask me. It is like Drunken Master where you have to listen carefully.

Classic Jackie Chan 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Jackie Chan is back again in this fast paced action comedy. The action starts in Hong Kong, where Jackie works as a sales assistant selling exercise equipment. The viewer is immediately thrown into an action packed chase scene where Jackie pursues robbers in a shopping mall. Jackie Chan always makes good use of the props surrounding him, which is always a delight to witness. The action is then tranferred to Korea where he meets his missing Korean father, who worked as a double agent for the Koreans and the Turkish drug lords. Jackie is now involved in the unwrapping of the mystery which surrounded his father. The decoding of a telephone number leads him to a bank in Turkey. Here he is pursued by both Turkish and Korean drug barons who are looking for the Opiate Maxe, a highly addictive drug.

Although the plot is nothing to shout about, the action scenes more than make up for it. The best chasing/fighting scene had me in fits of giggles, when Jackie is chased through a Turkish market naked with nothing but props he picks up on the way to cover his modesty! This is classic Jackie Chan, where the fight scenes are brilliantly orchestrated and with dashing of humour thrown in. One thing I can't figure out is who are the girls on the cover of the DVD. They certainly weren't featured in the film as the two main girls who do paly in the film are orientals.
