ALWAYS stay with original 1 out of 5 stars.

Why American production make HK movies look so cheap? First of all, they cut off so much scene, second of all ruin it by making look acting so dumb by English Dubb. For ANY of HK movies, ALWAYS stick with ORIGINAL LICENSED HK RELEASE. Be careful with cheap imports, boots though.

Classic Jackie Chan 4 out of 5 stars.

Jackie Chan is back again in this fast paced action comedy. The action starts in Hong Kong, where Jackie works as a sales assistant selling exercise equipment. The viewer is immediately thrown into an action packed chase scene where Jackie pursues robbers in a shopping mall. Jackie Chan always makes good use of the props surrounding him, which is always a delight to witness. The action is then tranferred to Korea where he meets his missing Korean father, who worked as a double agent for the Koreans and the Turkish drug lords. Jackie is now involved in the unwrapping of the mystery which surrounded his father. The decoding of a telephone number leads him to a bank in Turkey. Here he is pursued by both Turkish and Korean drug barons who are looking for the Opiate Maxe, a highly addictive drug.

Although the plot is nothing to shout about, the action scenes more than make up for it. The best chasing/fighting scene had me in fits of giggles, when Jackie is chased through a Turkish market naked with nothing but props he picks up on the way to cover his modesty! This is classic Jackie Chan, where the fight scenes are brilliantly orchestrated and with dashing of humour thrown in. One thing I can't figure out is who are the girls on the cover of the DVD. They certainly weren't featured in the film as the two main girls who do paly in the film are orientals.

pitiful 1 out of 5 stars.

I've been reading the reviews... and noticing how everyone who gave it 'top marks' saying it was 'hylarious', 'the bets movie ever', and so on and so forth, have never seen the original anime, or even better, read the manga.
If they had I'm sure none of those people would give it more than it's due - 1 star (for J.C. fans, maybe 2).
This movie is a poor excuse for an adaptation. And a disgrace for the original City Hunter. Jackie Chan as Saeba Ryo?! Puh-lease!
The attempts at manga/anime humor fall on barren ground and turn the movie into an even more of a farce as it already is.
I wouldn't recomend this movie not even to my worst enemy and I agree with the reviewer who said 'when you die and go to Hell, Satan makes you watch this movie'. I can't imagine a torture greater than that. I'd take boiling oil any time!

Based on a popular Japanese comic strip, Hong Kong's high-flying martial arts action hero Jackie Chan stars as private Ryu Saeba in City Hunter. Hired to find the runaway daughter of a Japanese publishing tycoon, Ryu's first impulse is to turn the job down - until he sees a picture of the beautiful Shizuko (Kumiko Goto). Hot on her heels, Ryu tracks her down on board a cruise ship, and much to the annoyance of his jealous female sidekick Kaori (Joey Wong) the womanizing Ryu seems more interested in catching Shizuko's attention than returning her safely to her father. However, Ryu's romantic plans quickly go astray when a gang of ruthless criminals hijack the ship and hold the passengers to ransom. To save the day Jackie Chan's unique action style reigns supreme in a series of brilliantly conceived fight sequences as Ryu swings into action to dispatch the bad guys and rescue the goergeous Shizuko!

stuck between a 2 and a 3, but it was enjoyable 3 out of 5 stars.

The movie starts off with these 5 convicts going to jail. They become friends and go live at one of the convicts uncle's house and try to make it on the outside world.

There is not really much action and that is why I watched it. but the comedy was pretty good. It does have one hilarious sequence where one of the guys is reading a book on invisibility. When the other 4 find out they trick him into thinking he really is invisible. Sammo was at his best in scenes like these, but this movie didn't have enough of them.

Now Jackie Chan is in this but he only appears in a few scenes and you will not see him for 30-40 minutes at a time Then when he does show up he will just be walikgn down the street and run into Yuen Biao and get into a fight. This fight was only 30 seconds long but was awesome! Jackie is a cop in this and he really should have been in the film a little bit more.

So the group of convicts pisses off James Tien and his gang and they have one spectacular fight. Sammo has a flyign backwards jump kick that has to be seen to be believed.

So this movie has like 7 action sequences but 1 or maybe 2 that really deliver.

Also check this out to see Jackie Chan as the Tony Hawk of roller skating. And with a comment like that I feel the need to tell you that this movie is much better than Jackie's 'The BIg Brawl'.

Editorial Review:

"It's an epic!" howls one of the fighters in the free-for-all finale, overwhelmed by the sheer number of characters that get crowded into a single room, all pounding away at each other. Indeed, every comic actor and most of the leading action stars in Hong Kong in 1983 seem to have been squeezed into this amiable kung fu comedy--there are even tiny cameo appearances by several famous movie directors (Ann Hui, Tsui Hark, Wu Ma). This picture marks the debut of a loose-knit group of farce-action stalwarts, the Five Lucky Stars, stumble-bum reformed crooks who attempt to go straight by setting up a cleaning service, but can't seem to help getting into tons of trouble. The Stars went on to appear in several sequels, including My Lucky Stars. Jackie Chan, as a cop pursuing the hapless crooks, is essentially the straight man here, and he seems to be using a stunt double in some of his big scenes. This is a close as Chan ever got to phoning in a performance. --David Chute

I felt like a fool for 80 days after watching this film. 1 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the worst movie of Jackie Chan. It's boring. There are no funny scenes. The scenes look fake. The acting is not engaging. Anrnold could not save the film.

I tried very hard to stay in the theatre until the end. After 30 minutes, I felt very sleepy. It's one of the worst movies of Jackie Chan. What a waste of money and time!

Editorial Review:

High-octane gas, pumped out by the buoyant maestro of Hong Kong action, Jackie Chan. In this outing, the irrepressible Chan plays a Hong Kong cop teamed up (gloriously) with a Chinese inspector played by Michelle Yeoh (a.k.a. Michelle Khan). The plot ranges all over Southeast Asia, culminating with Jackie hanging from a helicopter ladder high over the streets of Kuala Lumpur. This one's notable for the ingenuity of the stunts, and for allowing two of Asia's top female stars to do their bad thing. The great Maggie Cheung (Chinese Box) plays Chan's girlfriend, who has a tendency to pop up at the most inopportune moments; and Yeoh executes a hair-raising motorcycle jump onto a moving train--an absolute jaw-dropper. Originally released as Police Story III, the picture was rereleased in America as Supercop in 1996, after Chan's U.S. breakthrough with Rumble in the Bronx. The new version is slightly shorter than the original, and features a new soundtrack of English-language dialogue (awkwardly dubbed, but that's par for the course) and blaring rock music. Great fun any way you slice it, and--for the uninitiated--a terrific introduction to the humorous, high-kicking world of Jackie Chan. --Robert Horton

this it a realy good movie (Who cares about Kang Jack Sang?) 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I this is a very good movie written by Sammo Hung I must say this it is a very childish movie! As it was was made to be this is the considerd the second movie in the very long series that just continues. actully the series borrows from Winners and sinners(considerd to be the first) but isn't also Pom Pom borrows from winners and sinners. Most of this movie is about nothing but jokes about grooping and rapeing women. I dont want to say too much about this movie becuase I want you to watch it but first one must watch winners and sinners. Kang Jack sang is only in the first 3 movies a little sammo comes in and out from time to time after the first three but it is a stupid movie and if you dont like those dont watch the movie but I love sammo hung he is a great actor and writer he just never got as huge as Kang Jack Sang(Jakie Chan) Becuase he likes to share the spot light and isnt as selfcentered as Kang Jack Sang.

Richard eing funny funny man
Yuen Baio great stunt guy and actor I think never got famious but needs a hand used to do a lot of Kang Jack sang's (JACKIE CHAN'S) stunts ALL THE TIME but never got the credit.

I like some of Kang Jack Sang's movies but I don't respect him as a person

Fox/Fortune Star gives us teh movie with great picture quality, good sound, and widescreened 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The movie starts out with a really cool scene showing the destruction of the Shaolin Temple. Look for a quick cameo by Wilson Tong. Sammo is in a cool role as like a general. His buckteeth look a bit stupid but his fighting doesn't. THIS IS A DORIAN TAN MOVE but Jackie Chan is great in his small role as a man looking to help out Tan take care of the villian played by james Tien. The story is not going to go down as one of the best ever told. A swordsman comes to help them out and they take down the evil guys. The thing that really stood out is Jackie playing a serious role. He does it very well and his fight with a spear was awesome. Sammo and Dorian Tan have a good fight. Really good fighting all around. The final fight is not spectacular but James Tien puts on a good performance.

The DVD is great. Widecreened, great picture quality, and dual language tracks. Just about all that you could ask for.

Death only means a hole in my body! -- Tan 4 out of 5 stars.

Early in John Woo's career as a director in Hong Kong, he had the auspiciousness to direct three of the seven fortunes in Yuen Biao, Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung in their first movie together Hand of Death (1976: Chinese Title literally means Shaolin Gate) though much was not made of this at the time because they were all struggling to make a career. They have yet to work together again in such a capacity though they have said nothing but kind words about each other since. An interesting point, in hindsight, is that the star of the film is none of the three (it is hard to spot Yuen Biao as his role is of a stunt double and bit actor) but Korean export and Tae Kwon Do expert Dorian Tan Tao-Liang.

Dorian Tan Tao-Liang stars as Yun Fei a Shaolin trained fighter looking to find Zhang Yi (John Woo) and escort him through White Stone town and across the White River. Zhang holds a map of all Qing bases in the Guangdong and Guangxi provinces in southeast China. He can get a hold of Zhang by contacting pupil Chiu Guo. However, when he is found, he has already been arrested and ready to be beheaded by the Manchus led by a traitor of the Shaolin Shih Xiaofeng (ubiquitous bad guy James Tien: Fearless Hyena, Winners and Sinners) who has taught himself White Crane Soul Chaser Style (he is the titular Hand of Death). Even though his Kung Fu is superior, he has the additional help of Eight Bodyguards with different styles and two top ranking guards in Smiling Fox and Du Ching (Sammo Hung who also does the stunt coordination) whose overbite is quite preposterous and resembles a "hopping vampire" though he is trained in tiger and crane styles.

Yun Fei gets the assistance of a woodcutter Tan, who helped him earlier to get past a roadblock and dispose of a body (a true friend helps you get rid of a corpse). Tan's elder brother was killed by Shih's men. Tan also obtains the help of "The Wanderer" (Yeung Wai) an expert swordsman who accidentally killed a prostitute he was in love with also because of Shih and would have given up his sword for good if it was not for Yun. These men will help Zhang Yi get across the river to get the plans to help once and for all defeat the Qing Empire and restore the Ming Dynasty (the plot of the Qing Dynasty as bad guys is one of the staples of Hong Kong martial art movies like Heroes Two, Royal Tramp and Iron Monkey).

Many will have bought, borrowed or rented this movie because of the presence of Jackie Chan. He originally was only supposed to have a stunt man role (helped hired onto the film by his "big brother" Sammo Hung) but as John Woo found one of the Korean actors lacking in the physical department, he replaced his part with Jackie Chan and expanded his role according to an interview with Lee Server in "Asian Pop Cinema" he stated he "changed the whole script to focus more on him and show his great skill." though there might be some fraudulent hindsight with that statement. Jackie originally had been the stunt coordinator for Woo's first film Young Dragons (1975) that came out a year earlier. Jackie did get hurt on the film, getting knocked unconscious after being pulled by a cable while being kicked by Dorian Tan and landing and hitting his head on a rock (though this would not be as bad as his most famous accident in Operation Condor where he almost lost his life).

Others might watch this because it belongs in the oeuvre of John Woo. It is still very early in his career (his fourth film in two years of being a director), but you can see traces of his talent. There are some nice handheld scenes, a little use of slow motion and hints of "heroic bloodshed" elements (though this would come to blossom in Last Hurrah for Chivalry (1979)) like an early scene when Jackie Chan and Dorian Tan first meet which seemed to hint a certain homoerotism (or else those were some of the most strange smiles I have ever seen), but then failed to capitalize on it later in the film.

Overall, this is a decent, yet unspectacular film. The direction is solid, yet it does not feel like a John Woo directed movie. The scenery of the Korean hillsides is absolutely beautiful and helps makes this movie easier to watch. The story is mediocre, but not too many glaring holes in the story. The Kung Fu ability is give or take. The kicking of Dorian Tan is beautiful to behold, his punching ability and forms are good but not great. Jackie Chan is also awesome with his fighting and you get to see him use a spear the Little Eagle God Lance as it is called in the film (which that and the staff are the traditional weapons that Jackie is best with). The highlight fight scenes of the movie are when Jackie fights several of the Eight Bodyguards and later when Dorian fights Sammo. The latter is especially impressive because of Sammo's willingness to hurt his body to make Tan look good. James Tien is not much of a martial artist, though his acting if fine as he is the consummate Hong Kong bad guy, so his hand-to-hand combat scenes are a bit pedantic though he has one scene wielding a sword that was good.

The Fox/Fortune Star R1 release is a very good barebones release. There are no dubtitles and the film is uncut. There is an English dub, a genuine Mandarin mono track and it is presented in a very nice looking widescreen transfer though there is some damage to the elements. Unfortunately, like most of the Fox/Fortune Star releases you only get trailers as extras. Here is another example where the best release is the R2 Hong Kong Legends version -- Ultra-Bit Edition.

Editorial Review:

Along with Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow launched a new fusion of comedy and kung fu. And it's easy to see why Snake has been so popular--it's easily the most engaging of Jackie Chan's early films. Everyone abuses and humiliates a downtrodden orphan (Chan) until he befriends an old man, who turns out to be the last master of the "snake fist" fighting style. Jackie becomes the old man's student and finds himself in battle with the master of the "eagle's claw" style, who has vowed to destroy the snake fist clan. Though these plot elements are familiar stuff, they're all executed with outstanding verve; the performances, the fight choreography, and even the obligatory training sequence are unusually complex and well filmed. Jackie is in top form and coming into his own as a star. --Bret Fetzer

Old but still good 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This, "The Protector", and "Jackie Chan's Police Force" were the first Jackie Chan films I saw as a kid. Granted the other two were better films (especially "Police Force"), but I really liked the humor in the film. The story was good and Jackie was funny as always and Mako (his uncle) was funny too. The action was toned down quite a bit for a Jackie chan movie not as fast paced or as hard hitting, but over all it was enjoyable. Just remember this was one of his first movies here.

"The Big Brawl" 5 out of 5 stars.
