My least favorite police story 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Of the four good police stories (new police story wasnt that good), this is my least favorite. Not because the movie lacked anything in any way, but just because I like the other three that much more. This one seemed to have the least daring stunts and the least amount of fight scenes.

Having said all of that, this movie is AWESOME!

Police Story 2 3 out of 5 stars.

Not a bad Jackie Chan Movie. It has the typical Jackie humor and great stunts which are always entertaining. Grab some Popcorn and start kicking the air! :-)

Not Chan's Best "Story" 3 out of 5 stars.

"Police Story" wasn't my favorite Jackie Chan movie, but nobody short of a blind person can deny that its action, humor, and stunts were enough to raise both eyebrows. Alas, much of what made the original film memorable has been undone in the sequel, to the point of there being almost no comparison between the two. It's still a pretty good action film by most standards, but nonetheless a disappointing follow-up to one of the genre's most appreciated masterpieces.

The story: Ka Kui (Chan) is still a policeman, but his unorthodox practices and exploits of the previous adventure have gotten him demoted from hero to zero. On top of this, the villainous Mr. Chu (Chor Yuen) has been released from prison and promises to make life miserable for him and his unstable girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung, In the Mood for Love)...all whilst the police department is faced with a case involving the robbing of $10 million from building owners by demolition-savvy terrorists.

The movie switches between an action vehicle and a police thriller more than once, with wire-planting and surveillance scenes taking precedence more than once. Frankly, I don't watch a Jackie Chan movie for stuff like that, and when it starts going on for half-hours at a time, I started losing interest. Granted, it all comes back to some good martial arts scenes, but for the most part, the film takes itself much too seriously (the original also did, but at least it could make up for it on a more regular basis). The only non-action aspect of the film that I really enjoyed was the continuation of Jackie's and Maggie's onscreen relationship, which peaked in a hilarious scene where Maggie shouts Chan through a shower room filled with naked, embarrassed policemen and corners him in a bathroom stall. Besides that, though, there's less physical comedy from Jackie, and that's not cool.

I shouldn't complain too much, though: there is a lot of cool action to fall back on...it's just not as cool as that of the original film. Chan has four hand-to-hand fights: the first one is against Chu's thugs in a restaurant, and while still very entertaining, it's nothing we haven't seen out of Jackie before (although there is a cool move where he breaks an open drawer with a man's face); the next is a more inventive follow-up fight in a park where Chan takes on an even larger group of attackers wielding metal sticks; he then has a brawl with two CID agents that too short to warrant interest; the movie ends on a high note with Chan taking on the three terrorists in a fireworks factory - this includes the vast majority of the film's stuntwork (comprised of Chan the bad guys falling from very high places) and a rather impressive fight between Ka Kui and Chan-movie veteran Benny Lai as a deaf-mute pyromaniac.

Dragon Dynasty did a reasonably good job with this release, though they apparently shared all of the good stuff with the prequel: included are two Cantonese audio tracks (stereo and mono) and one English one in which Chan does not do his own dubbing, feature commentary by Brett Ratner and Bey Logan, a 33-minute tribute to the Jackie Chan stunt team, alternate outtakes, a location guide, and a Ratner/Logan interview...but no personal words from Chan himself. Alas, even the special features of the original film are better than the sequel's. This general uneven comparison shows that even Hong Kong has its problems with having sequels live up to their predecessors, and not even director Chan could shatter that stereotype. If you're a fan of Jackie's, you'll already own this, but newcomers to Dragon Dynasty should start somewhere else, regardless of the name recognition.

    Editorial Review:

(Martial Arts/Foreign) The explosive sequel to Jackie Chan’s groundbreaking original, Police Story 2 is famous internationally for some of the most daring and inventive stunt sequences ever committed to film. Despite his success at apprehending criminals, Kevin Chan's unorthadox approach to his work as a police officer sees him demoted to the traffic branch. Despite this, the man he put behind bars is now out of prison, and has vowed to make his life a misery.

Much Funner Than the Originals 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've long been a fan of Jackie's films. He breathed new life into the genre like no other with his humorous style of combat; and it's inspiring to still see him move like he does at his age. The action in The New Police Story were just as fun as most of his lighter films; and the stunts were typically incredible, just as you expect from a Hong Kong production that isn't stiffled by Hollywood politics and/or insurance. And despite the more dramatic seriousness of Police Story, with a little Drunken Master mixed in, I found myself laughing much more than I expected. Aside from a few sequences that demand a little further explanation, The New Police Story was about as much fun as my favorite Chan films. The only real disappointment of the Blu-ray was that Lionsgate didn't include a lossless track for the original language. A lossless audio option is provided for the dub track; but only lossy audio is included in the original Chinese. That said, since I had a guest that doesn't like reading her movies, I opted for the dubbed track when we watched it and was surprised at the fidelity. The translation was word-for-word the same as the subtitles in the approx 5 minute portion of the film I compared the two. And the harmonics sounded very natural and dynamic. That Jackie did (most) of the voice dub for his character himself, further helped to make sitting through the dubbed track, not only bearable, but enjoyable.

    Editorial Review:

Welcome to the next generation of POLICE STORY! The once famous but now disgraced Inspector Chan (Jackie Chan) and his new rookie partner, Frank (Nicholas Tse), are headed towards an action-packed showdown with a sadistic punk gang. It’s a new breed of criminal for sure, but never count out an old pro when it comes to solving the twists...and using his fists!

    Editorial Review:

Spy missions for the CIA may be difficult and dangerous, but they're nothing compared to the challenges of raising a family. Bob Ho (Jackie Chan) is a Chinese spy on loan to the CIA, but to Gillian (Amber Valletta) and her kids Farren (Madeline Carroll), Ian (Will Shadley), and Nora (Alina Foley), he's just a neighbor and pen salesman. Gillian and Bob are attracted to one another, and Bob is ready to tell Gillian what he really does for a living. He's prepared to retire from his career in espionage so they can take their relationship to the next level. Unfortunately for Bob, Gillian's kids are less than impressed with their nerdy neighbor, and that means his relationship with Gillian can't move forward. When Gillian has to leave town suddenly, Bob volunteers to take care of the children in hopes of "making them" like him. Ian inadvertently downloads a secret file from Bob's computer, and suddenly the Russian terrorist Poldark (Magnus Sheving) is bent on destroying Bob and the children. As if Bob weren't having enough trouble negotiating the daily duties of making the children's breakfast, getting them to school, and keeping track of young Nora in the local mall, he unexpectedly discovers that one of his CIA coworkers is working for the Russians (George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus play Bob's colleagues). Bob finds himself alone in the fight of a lifetime as he battles to keep the children safe from the violent Russian and his associates. The Spy Next Door is full of action-packed martial arts scenes that highlight Jackie Chan's prowess and will inspire much mock fighting and begging for lessons by school-age children, but it's also a funny take on the very real difficulties of dating and parenting that adults will readily relate to. While there is a fair amount of fighting in the film, it is tastefully rendered and won't upset most children ages 7 and older. --Tami Horiuchi

A bowl of Fun 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As an old Jackie Chan fan I was of course pleased to see him finally make his breakthrough in Hollywood with "Rush Hour" and "Shanghai Noon" some years ago, and I think highly of both movies.

But whereas the Rush Hour franchise has run on for too long, the tale of the two accidental western heroes is (as of yet) unspoiled. "Shanghai Knights" is funny, well produced, well acted, well actionpacked, generally well made, and, in my opinion, better than its predecessor "Shanghai Noon".

The jokes work, the action works, the plot works. In short: it works.

    Highly recommendable.

Jackie Chan (RUSH HOUR 2) and Owen Wilson (THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS) jump back in the saddle for SHANGHAI KNIGHTS, the hilarious sequel to the hit action-comedy SHANGHAI NOON. When Chon Wang (Chan) gets news of his estranged father's murder in Shanghai, he leaves his honorable life as Carson City's sheriff in a cloud of dust and reunites with his yarn-spinning sidekick, Roy O'Bannon (Wilson). Together they make their way to London on a daring quest for honor and revenge. Hilarious escapades and hair-raising adventures ensue as our heroes find themselves in the middle of a devious plot to eliminate the entire royal family. And Chon gives Victorian Britain a royal kick in the pants as he tries to avenge his father's death and keep love-struck Roy away from his sister!

WARNING!!! BEWARE OF THE DIMENSION DVD EDITION!!! Features inside. 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

    INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT A:

Jackie Chan is an underestimated genious outside his own reputation, the historical importance of his legacy trascends his best known image as a comedian and daredevil acrobat: There's a talented Director and visionary, a man who changed the Action film industry in Honk Kong forever with his personal touch and style in the early 80's, by creating the perfect fusion of goofy physical comedy and incredible restless action with some of the most impressive and dangerous stunts ever displayed on film. This 1982 period film about sailors, police and pirates, was the consolidation of Chan as a star in Asia after his major breakthrought with Yuen Woo Ping's kung fu classic "Drunken Master", and a movie that started an influence to follow from there on in the industry.

This is a true milestone, considered by critics not only as the first important Honk Kong action comedy , but one of the best productions of the genre next to Chan's second best directed film, the timeless classic "Police Story". Besides being one of his most entertaining and funny movies, the film contains some of Jackie's best stunts ever. We've all seen the reckless and almost imprudent asian stuntmen falling on their heads and backs from the roof to the solid floor in many occasions in 80's HK action movies, but no one can get used to watch Jackie climbing handcuffed to a flag pole, jumping to the top of a clock tower, and then falling to the ground with no protection but a couple of cloth roof tops. And he did it at least three times, two of them registered in this film. Even the MTV idiots getting their private parts bitten by baby alligators, thinks that its totally insane. Outstanding comedy and action, great period scenarios, enjoyable classic soundtrack: This movie defines an era.

So Jackie became a hughe international star and the world embraced this delightful character and action hero that he is, and then came the re-releases of his early and most important work to satisfy the needs of us fans. Among those DVD releases, unfortunately we can find editions like this one. Check this out:

    THE PROBLEMS:

    - Incomplete, cutted version with english dubbing, and the worst of all, the original amusing and perfectly synchronized music score was replaced by a new, awful synthesized random score, killing the comedy and sucking the joy out of the movie by trying to turn it into the current action flick. I mean, the "updated" new cover of the DVD speaks for itself.

    - The Classic Golden Harvest presentation and original opening sequence with credits, was replaced by a computer generated pirate flag : Jackie Chan's Project A, the new title, makes clear that this release is a mere vehicle to show Jackie to new audiences, with no respect for anything else.

    - The bar fight sequence is incomplete: The whole "spaghetti" incident was excluded, along with precious seconds of the brawl. Nice.

    - The scene in the gambling house in wich the Sammo Hung's character is introduced to the movie, was completely excluded. Now, he just happens to know everyone. Awesome.

    - From the Police training sequence, the "shower" scene is missing.

    - The intro of Sammo, Jackie and Yuen Biao in the arrest sequence at the club house is missing. The fight sequences are chopped off too.

    - The intro of the rifle robbery on a boat at night perpetrated by Sammo and Jackie, conceived as a Pekin Opera satire, is chopped off and ruined by the lack of score, waysting the rhymes and the joke intended.

    - The pirate assault to the english ship sequence, chopped off.

    - From then, everything is in place, till the new ending credits. By this time, only sadness for the lost original music score and impotence for the waysted money remains.

Honestly, the picture and sound are decent. But that's it. The intention of this DVD edition is to introduce new audiences to Jackie's glorious past, and in that part only, it delivers. But this is not the final choice for any collector or faithful fan, not for a moment.

    THE SOLUTION:

A couple years ago, FORTUNE STAR released a flawless remastered ALL-REGION DVD Edition, including the complete version in Cantonese DTS, 5.1, and original 2.0 mono soundtrack (Hurra!) with original character voices and music score, all the deleted scenes and outtakes, original HK trailer, and photo galleries. More than any fan could ask for, i tell you.

Dear Customer: Look for this edition in Asian DVD stores online, and forget about this Edition. Don't be afraid, they're just as safe and efficient as here, i guarantee.

Edited American version? 3 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Being an avid DVD collector I have made it a personal goal to collect every Dragon Dynasty release. This subsidiary of the Wienstien Company has gone to great lengths to release ultimate unedited editions of great Asian movies. Some of the films they are releasing were previously released on the Dimension home video label and are being re-released under the Dynasty label with more special features and..well most of the time...unedited versions of the Asian release. The Jet Li film Twin Warriors (as titled on the Dimension release) was re-released unedited under the title Tia Chi Master. I was hoping for the same with Supercop.

Sadly the the Dragon Dynasty release of Supercop is just a more special featured filled version of the earlier Dimension release because, for some reason unknown, Dyanasty has only released the American cut of the film. Where is my unedited 100 minute version of Police Story III: Supercop? Instead we get the same edited American release with a different score, added hip-hop soundtrack, and a lame title sequence. This is a shame because I have always been extremely happy with Dragon Dynasty's releases so far. Why not include both the U.S. and Asian version as they did with The Proctor DVD? Extremely disappointing.

Other than the fact that Supercop is the edited American version, the rest of the DVD set is a typical steller Dynasty release with great special features and another grand commentary by Hong Kong film expert Bey Logan.

    Editorial Review:

Martial arts icons Jackie Chan (Forbidden Kingdom) and Michelle Yeoh (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) are at their absolute peak in this freewheeling, action-packed adventure. A once-in-a-lifetime one-two punch, they team up as a risk-taking cop and a strait-laced but beautiful federal agent, working undercover together to take down an international drug ring. Risking life and limb, Chan and Yeoh perform their own incredible stunts, dangling from a soaring helicopter, leaping onto careening cars, and delivering beat-downs on the roof of a speeding train. Fast-paced, innovative, and entertaining, Supercop (aka Police Story 3) captures two legends at their best, in "a movie that will never be equaled" (LoveHKFilm.com).

"Don't just stand there wearing white!" 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

GORGEOUS is a change of pace for Jackie Chan. Oh, this one still boasts your basically incredible martial arts sequences, but, really, this film marks Jackie Chan's foray into romantic comedy territory. And, despite that Jackie doesn't seem to have the acting range to pull off this type of leading man role, the other elements in this picture lift it into something I find quite entertaining.

The plot revolves around a young starry-eyed village girl named Bu (Qi Shu), who finds a message in a bottle and flies to Hong Kong to meet the message's author. In Hong Kong Bu meets and falls for C.N. (Jackie Chan), a wealthy, lonely playboy businessman heading up a trash recycling empire. But as Bu and C.N. become close, their fledgling romance is interrupted by C.N.'s lifelong rival, who persists in sending his clumsy thugs after C.N.

Whether you like GORGEOUS or not will hinge on how you feel about the lead actress, Qi Shu, as this film is as much a showcase for her as it is for Jackie Chan. My feeling on this is that Qi Shu wafts in like a breath of fresh air and is instantly captivating. There's an infectious exuberance about her, and a certain naturalness. I could watch her expressive face all day long. She definitely sets the mood of this film, which is mostly bright and whimsical and sweet. Wonderful actor Tony Leung also deserves his propers, as his gay fashion shutterbug provides a good share of the funnies (I couldn't help cracking up at his elevator scene with Jackie). In fact, some of the best moments happen when Leung and Qi Shu are playfully sharing the screen.

Jackie Chan is never better than when he's performing his breathtaking stunts and acrobatics. Let's face it, dude's strength isn't in delivering lines. I'll say this, though, I've never seen Jackie so wistful and low-key than in this role, and he manages to tone down his usual mugging. Jackie has stated publicly that the character of C.N. is like him in many ways (both are clean-living, keep fit, like to wear white outfits, are environmentally aware). Sadly, though, this doesn't translate into an adept acting performance. As a romantic leading man, yeah, he's pretty wooden. Perhaps aware of this lack, Jackie makes sure that Qi Shu and Leung get plenty of camera time.

Thankfully for Jackie, he does engage in several lighthearted scuffles (although not as many as we'd like). Jackie, as ever, is amazingly inventive and agile with his choreography. This time, he uses baseball bats, a boat, and a motorbike as supporting characters in his fight scenes. His opponent in two of these brawls is the tiny dynamo Bradley James Allan, who in real life happens to be the first ever non-Asian member of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team. In GORGEOUS, he plays martial artist "Allan," hired by C.N.'s rival to beat up C.N. and partly because his shorter stature would make C.N.'s defeat even more ignominious. As several persons have remarked, it's refreshing that Jackie and Allan's combat is marked with mutual respect and a spirit of competition. It reminds me a little of Return of the Dragon, of Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris's classic colosseum fight to the death. The only downside to Jackie and Allan's two otherwise excellent fights is that the camera was sped up in spots.

Again, GORGEOUS isn't your typical Jackie Chan martial-arts action-comedy. It's more sedate in its pacing and, would you believe, more character driven. Some fans won't dig it, won't like the more contemplative Jackie Chan on screen and that it's not more action-oriented. But I like GORGEOUS a lot. Jackie Chan tried to change up his style, and, even if he wasn't completely successful, I'm still glad he had the guts to experiment and branch out. I say, check out this flick. You might even develop a craving for Chinese pot rice.
