Comedy Holds Up Years On 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Holy cow, it's been nearly a decade since Shanghai Noon was released.

Recently I was up for a ski trip where the hotel rooms only had VHS players. We borrowed a copy of Shanghai Noon 'for old time sakes'.

I was rather pleased with how well the comedy of Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan has held up over the years. Both are masters of timing, but in their own way. I'd forgotten just how funny this movie was until it reached the train robbery scene.

I've watched both actors (especially Owen Wilson) in many movies since this one's release in 2000, but I can hardly say they've improved as their comedic stylings were as solid then as they remain today.

(I cannot vouch for all of Wilson's films because some seemed too silly to watch, but the ones where he's half-serious half-funny are classic in my mind)

Editorial Review:

Two cultures collide in SHANGHAI NOON, a wildly hilarious, stunt-filled action-adventure comedy starring the death-defying action hero Jackie Chan (RUSH HOUR 2), Owen Wilson (ARMAGEDDON, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS), and Lucy Liu (PAYBACK, CHARLIE'S ANGELS). Chan plays Chinese Imperial Guard Chon Wang (say it out loud) who hightails it to the wild and woolly West to rescue the beautiful kidnapped Princess Pei Pei (Liu). When he meets up with the laid-back outlaw cowboy dude Roy O'Bannon (Wilson), they form the best mismatch ever made in the rough and tumble Old West -- the two face jail, brawls, bordellos, and the vilest villains this side of the Great Wall! Spectacular stunts, outrageous irreverence, and epic vistas reign as East meets West in a battle for honor, royalty, and a fortune in gold! It's a real kick!

Editorial Review:

One chops the chops. The other talks the talk. Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker bring fresh style and swagger to buddy-cop movies with these smash-hit action-comedies that showcase the stars’ kicky chemistry and charisma. Rush Hour (Side A) has them learning – somehow, someway, anyway – to work together while tackling an international kidnapping case in L.A. Rush Hour 2 (Side B) bullets the duo from Hong Kong to L.A. to Vegas on a trail of international counterfeiters. Hang on for action that moves at the speeds of fast, faster and funnier!

Chan Good, Disney Bad 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The good news about this film is that it stars the always hilarious Jackie Chan and is quite funny. The bad news is that it was done by Disney.

Disney has alway treated its sources arrogantly and callously, acting as if could `do better' than a writer beloved by generations of kids. J. R. R. Tolkien noticed that in the 1930s, and shuddered at the thought that his tales might get their treatment. More recently, Disney abused Prince Caspian, by Tolkien's friend C. S. Lewis, remaking it into something they thought would do better with kids, resulting in mediocre performance at the box office and an agreement between them and Walden Media, that Disney would play no role in subsequent Narnia films. Good riddance.

In this case, Disney's victim is Jules Verne and his 1873 classic, Around the World in Eighty Days. The original is so heavily altered for the worst, that almost the only parallel to the original is the fact that both involve someone circling the world of the late 1800s in 80 days. Disney should have had enough integrity not to steal Verne's title and prestige for their own tale.

Even the essence has been altered by the too-clever-by-half twits at Disney. Verne loved science and pioneered science fiction as new form of literature. Almost all the scientists in this Disney perversion are corrupt, blundering or stupid. That and a plot that isn't good for children, reflecting too much of what passes for `values' in Hollywood, makes this a film parents might want to take a pass on.

--Michael W. Perry, Stories for Girls: Lovingly Adapted for Twenty-First Century Children

Just like the first two films, Rush Hour 3 brings the same great performances by Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. The action is still there and the comedy is still funny. Yet the film doesn't really add much to the series it just doesn't ruin it. So if you liked the first two films than you will most likely like the third one.

Awesome!! 5 out of 5 stars.

a rope and bucket for an escalator? 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Probably the last of Chan's great movies, at least in terms of fights and stunts. Certainly not in plot: A highly skilled soldier with amnesia? Chan traveling with two female companions? Hmm... haven't seen either of those before! Honestly it doesn't really matter. This is still Chan doing what Chan does best. Plus it's always interesting to see a Hong Kong production of an English-language film that takes place in Europe and Africa. That alone makes it worth a view.

Chan plays a soldier who wakes up in Namibia with no memory of who he is or how he got there. After making some new friends he travels to Johannesburg where he asks the local authorities for help. Some government goons then show up and take him into custody. He escapes and journeys to the Netherlands in his continuous pursuit of the truth and ends up facing intrigue, betrayal, and more goons.

If you read the back of the case you'd think this was a serious film. It does take a little while before the comedy kicks in but it's quite frequent once it does. Fortunately a lot of the humor is stunt-based and there are some good moments. Unfortunately there aren't very many fights... but the quality of the ones here are top notch. From fighting while handcuffed to fighting while wearing wooden shoes to an awesome rooftop finale against two opponents who are timing one another to see who can knock Chan down the fastest!

The Columbia Tri Star DVD has flipside widescreen or fullscreen picture with very good quality. English language with a French dub and English or French subtitles. Sorry, no special features. The Hong Kong version contains several more minutes of footage and supposedly fills in a couple of the gaps. It would be cool to see this in its entirety but this version should satisfy most Chan fans for the majority of its 108 minutes.

Hilarious comedy based on a real race 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you love classic comedies, "Cannonball Run" is a must own, especially for all of the celebrities that take part in it. But, don't get the 2001 release which is only in DD 2.0 and that annoying clipper case. A brand-new 2009 DVD was released recently with 5.1 audio, superior picture and a fantastic audio commentary with director Hal Needham and producer Albert Ruddy. You learn so many fun facts about the film from it. For example, Burt and Dom's ambulance was a real race vehicle used by Hal and Brock Yates for one of the five real Cannonball Run races before the film was made where they raced it from Darion, Kentucky to Long Beach, California. It held 90 gallons of gasoline and they would get up to 145 MPH at times. A lot of the situations and characters in the movie were based on real events and people from the races. Burt, Dom, Jack Elam and Farrah's characters were all based on Hal and Brock, and a doctor and his wife that road with them during a race to make it seem like a legit ambulance if pulled over. One of the best audio commentaries I've heard in awhile and very funny. If you just want the commentary by itself, write me and I'll share it. Don't miss this movie if you have never seen it.

A wide variety of characters participate in an illegal cross-country road race. It's a hilarious comedic chase as the eccentric participants are willing to do anything to win.

Wonderfully entertaining 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

First, a disclaimer. If you take your cinematography seriously, if you are looking for good acting and a realistic story, this is not the movie for you. But if you enjoy slapstick comedy and a martial arts expert who pushes creativity to a higher level than anyone else, then Jackie Chan's Rumble in the Bronx is the movie for you!

The premise of the story is as follows: a young man flies in from Hong Kong to attend his uncle's wedding and to help him with the sale of his store. But during these events, a gang terrorizes the new store owner and causes a ruckus in Keung's neighborhood. Being the noble character that he is, Keung (Jackie Chan's character) defends the store, stands up to the gang, and as a result, winds up getting into a lot of trouble. But what will he do when the gang leader's girlfriend happens to be a neighbor that he has helped out in another situation? Which side will he take?

The action scenes in this film are phenomenal. Jackie Chan outdoes himself in using various items to defend himself and the helpless people of New York. The stunts are highlighted by his jump from one building to another (across a street, without cables or safety nets)! He even performed some of the final scenes on a broken ankle, including one in which he waterskis without the help of skis! The man is incredible!

This was the first Jackie Chan movie I had ever seen, but despite its silliness, he had me hooked! I recommend this movie highly to anyone who just wants to be entertained. Those looking for depth or any sort of "human touch" may wind up disappointed... but I was not!

POLICE STORY 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

JACKIE CHAN'S 1 OF HIS 1ST MOVIES HAS A PLOT BUT STILL CAN TIL IT IS DONE N JAP.

Who'd be a stuntman on a Jackie Chan film? 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

You have to wonder who on Earth would grow up wanting to be one of Jackie Chan's stunt team - looking at Police Story it's pretty obvious that you'll spend more time in the hospital than on the set. These guys aren't faking getting hurt - they really are getting hurt, and you don't need to see the end credits outtakes montage of them being carried away to work that out. But then, it's not as if Jackie Chan isn't sharing their pain. If it looks like there's a real sense of danger, that's because there was.

Filmed comparatively cheaply (part of it even in Chan's own house) as a reaction to Chan's disappointment with US co-production The Protector, it's a mixture of impressive action, lacklustre plotting and broad comedy - this is the kind of film where the moment you see a birthday cake you know it'll end up in someone's face (the motivation can be found in this disc's deleted scenes if you're interested). If the comedy doesn't play so well with some Western audiences, there's no such qualms with the action, whether it's the 16-minute opening shanty town action scene that sees Chan hanging onto the outside of a speeding bus by an umbrella (and saw stuntmen hospitalised after a stunt stolen by Tango and cash went visibly wrong), and inventive fight scene in and around a car or the hardcore action finale in a shopping center where escalators, display cases, mirrors, lights, clothes racks and a motor bike (don't ask where that came from) all become deadly weapons. The bill for broken glass alone must have been huge, let alone the cost in broken bones.

It's not Chan's best film despite being one of his breakthrough hits, but it's certainly one of the best. Sadly Dragon Dynasty's Region 1 NTSC DVD doesn't have as good or as clean a transfer as Hong Kong Legends' UK disc: it's acceptable but there's a lot of grain and its clear that they haven't spent too much time restoring it even if the print is clear. Where it scores is in the extras - deleted scenes, alternate outtakes, and an interview with Chan, and original trailer among them.

    Editorial Review:

Police Story breaks new ground with its breathtaking fights and incredible stunt sequences. Featuring a top-notch cast, which includes multi-award winning actresses Brigitte Lin & Maggie Cheung, director Chan combines a compelling storyline of an honest cop on the run from a false murder charge with dynamic visuals and full-blooded fight action which is electrified with emotional underscoring. In the case of this particular project the price of excellence was high, with many of Jackie's elite stunt team being seriously injured during the course of principal photography.
