Everybody was Kung Fu fighting.... 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

NINJA DEATH and its two sequels highlight this small collection of martial arts films. Another unusual item here is an episode of a little-remembered TV show that starred Lee Van Cleef as an aging ninja master. The plots of these are minimal-- mostly set-ups for hand-to-hand combat, ninja-style. NINJA ASSASSIN action is sure to please all fans of this ancient combat style.

For many an hour of kung fu fighting, these ten titles (plus 40 more) are also available on the MARTIAL ARTS 50 MOVIE PACK COLLECTION. Check it out!

Editorial Review:

A 1976 novelty item for Jackie Chan completists only; he plays one of his rare costume roles, and his only bad guy. The star is Jimmy Wang Yu (One Armed Swordsman) as Hero Mei, a freelance warrior whose top-secret weapons are explosive projectiles known as killer meteors. Mei is hired by the so-called "Immortal Meteor," Hua Wa-bin (Chan), to eliminate his pesky wife, who (Hua claims) is plotting to kill him. There are some clever, gimmicky fight sequences and some amusingly far-fetched weaponry. A couple of glamorous sword-fighting women are also involved, as is a potion called the Pulverizing Drug, which melts people into puddles, like vampires exposed to sunlight. But there's so much plot to get through (adapted from a lengthy serial novel by Gu Long), and so many long-winded explanations to plow through that none of the characters have much free time for fighting. The movie plays both as hard-boiled (with everybody betraying everybody else) and as a medieval Chinese conspiracy yarn: kung fu Robert Ludlum. --David Chute

Oh those who plan on purchasing this DVD- beware! 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

One star is not a rating of a film, but rather rating of DVD... Movie might be good, but I never got to watching it. The reason is that DVD is not playable. Nor by PS2, computer, DVD player or anything else. One of the reviewers recommends not to get "Video Asia" products, but any other Video Asia stuff worked. My advice is to watch out for a little label that says "Fortune 5 DVD". I purchased a DVD box called "Martial Temple Collection" that holds five DVDs... Four of them work well, but the one with Fortune 5 label doesn't work. Coinsidence? I don't think so.

If it plays, you'll love it 4 out of 5 stars.

I was more fortunate than the reviewers below in that my disc plays fine on my PC's DVD player. As the title suggests, this is just the early stuff that cemented Jackie as a star in Asia. Yes, the video footage is just as you would expect from films of this genre and era (grainy and poor audio) but you wouldn't be here if you expected anything different, right? The bottom line is that you will find yourself unable to take your eyes off the screen while Jackie and his talented partners are performing the most incredible Kung Fu, of many different styles, that has ever been seen on film. No special features but there are six scene selection markers on the main menu. This film tries to be a documentary with a narration by Rick Baker (nice British accent). He basically introduces several of the scenes explaining which movie they are from and some of the styles being used but there is way too little information about Jackie to be a real documentary so the film basically becomes a platform to simply show Jackie's POWERFUL talent as a martial artist - the greatest ever known!

Editorial Review:

An all-new film on the art of Jackie Chan with his best and greatest action ever! It’s classic Kung Fu action with Jackie Chan.

THIS MOVIE'S NOT TRUE TO JACKIE CHAN'S LEGACY! 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 9 people found this review helpful.

TWO COPS [JACKIE CHAN AND DANNY AIELLO] TRY TO BUST UP A MAJOR DRUG OPERATION. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THAT JACKIE CHAN TRYED TO BREAK INTO THE AMERICAN MARKET. AND LIKE THE FIRST TIME [HIS FIRST AMERICAN MOVIE WAS ''THE BIG BRAWL''], THIS FAILED AT BEING A HIT. BUT UNLIKE ''THE BIG BRAWL'', THIS MOVIE WAS PRETTY BORING, DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT HAS SOME GOOD ACTION SCENES. BUT, JACKIE DOES BEHAVE REALLY REALLY DIFFERENT IN THIS MOVIE, AS OPPOSED TO SOME OF HIS OTHER MOVIES. IN THIS MOVIE, JACKIE DROPS THE F BOMB [SEVERAL TIMES AT THAT], JACKIE TREATS WOMEN WITH LITTLE RESPECT, AND HE'S REALLY QUICK TO USE EXCESSIVE FORCE. WHAT RUINS THIS MOVIE IS THE FACT THAT JACKIE TRYS TO BE TOO SERIOUS AND THE FACT THAT JACKIE NEVER REALLY GETS A FAIR CHANCE TO FULLY SHOW OFF HIS AMAZING MARTIAL ARTS SKILLS. FANS OF JACKIE CHAN MIGHT WATCH THIS OUTTA CURIOSITY. BUT, IF YOU DO WATCH THIS, WAIT FOR IT TO COME ON TV OR RENT IT. BUT DON'T BUY THIS.

Editorial Review:

In Jackie Chan's first American movie, Chan and Danny Aiello (Do the Right Thing, Moonstruck) are cops who don't play by the rules. They're sent to Hong Kong to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a wealthy New York scumbag who's mixed up with an insidious heroin kingpin; to investigate, they go to a massage parlor, where the women try to kill them in the middle of providing sexual favors. It's not surprising that the gunplay is mundane, but even Chan's fight sequences are banal and unsurprising. The only entertainment value comes from absurdities, like a band of carjackers dressed like Adam and the Ants, or a sequence where it's revealed that the smuggled heroin is stashed inside of melons--and the stashing process is, inexplicably, performed by naked women. Jackie also swears; apparently the director thought he was making a Dirty Harry movie. An embarrassment. --Bret Fetzer

Editorial Review:

Another early kung fu flick from Jackie Chan's Wei Lo period (Wei Lo, who also directed Fists of Fury with Bruce Lee, directed seven of Chan's early films), Spiritual Kung Fu (alternatively titled Karate Ghostbuster) has Chan playing a familiar character--the bumbling underdog. Chan is a Shaolin monastery student whose fighting style and wits aren't quite up to par. Dissension and panic arise in the temple when a thief steals the book of the Seven Fist Style, a form of kung fu that allegedly makes its masters invincible. While guarding the temple's library, Chan comes across a lost book that teaches the Five Style Fists, which can defeat the Seven Fist Style. What's more, the book comes with five mischievous spirits that teach the style to Chan. When the monastery is challenged by the man who stole the Seven Fist Style, the spirits help Chan defeat him. The DVD transfer and voice dubbing are more akin to a Saturday afternoon television matinee than a technical tour de force, but the story certainly lends itself to its presentation. A campy and uneven effort (what else can you say about a movie in which spirits don white body paint and bright red fright wigs?), Spiritual Kung Fu, like the Wei Lo-directed Half a Loaf of Kung Fu, was shelved for a couple of years before being released in 1978. --Shannon Gee

if this didn't have pai paio in it, I could actually believe it was from 1962, 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

But it;s from the 70's. It starts out pretty good with pai paio looking like a baddassss in a cool white suit. And it actually gets very unwatchable from this pint on. I actually stuck through this for about 45 minutes until I had to fastforward to the end, and it still did not live up to the begining, and the beginning really sucked, I just thought it had potential. Pai paio actually looks pretty good, but NOTHING else was good in this. It truly deserves that 1/5, and wouold have gotten the 0/5 if they had it. Very sad movie.

I paid 5 dollars and 99 cents at the local cd used place and this is seriously worth around, can't think of a price, so I would say if you payed nothing for it you will get ripped off. So do not buy, movie starts out ok, but jimmy wang yu's screaming tiger is better. I thought that was bad, and jason is so much better than jimmy, it is just truly horrible to watch this movie. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UK born Toby Russel is considered an expert on HK cinema even in HK itself and his knowledge is put to great use in the documentaries he produces like this one and the "Top Fighter" series (recommended). Although fairly cheaply produced this doc contains many interesting clips and interviews with the stars from the famous to the not so famous. If yoy're interested in learning more about HK cinema then this is recommended and be sure to also check out the "Top Fighter" tapes as well.

Cinema of Vengeance Wouldn't Play in My DVD as well 1 out of 5 stars.

I can't rate this film as well. This is the only commercial DVD that wouldn't play in my DVD. The Distributor was a company called Fortune 5 DVD and imprinted on the disc was VideoAsia. The DVD video box artwork was nicely done with more information then is usually available, all for nothing.

I would avoid all Fortune 5 DVDs.

not too exciting 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

While Accidental Spy did a decent job of keeping me engaged, I think it was mostly the fact that the movie is slightly under an hour and half. The plot was not too bad, but what lacked throughout the movie was a really good stunt or two by Chan, and no good fight scenes that match up to his quality in other films. Don't get me wrong, there are some beautiful scenes and it will entertain, but I expected even more. This is one of Chan's later movies, and his age might be catching up, but all in all I hoped for bigger and better.

Like I said, the movie was engaging for the most part, and overall everything is decent, but thats all it is - no high excitement from maybe but a very few scenes. The best was in the middle of the movie, a good foot chase scene, where Chan is being chased by a gang of men through public streets, and Chan manages to loose his bathtowel, thus fighting off goons while finding random objects to keep himself "covered up". Its good, funny action. The finale of the movie is really nothing more than Chan saving a couple from their gas tanker that is on fire, nothing to do with the bad guys, they are done for before this scene. Its pretty cool scene but limits Chan's stunts and action abilites, except for his jump from the tanker in the end which is pretty cool.

The dubbing, fortunately, isn't too bad and Jackie Chan dubs his own voice which I think works so much better. Most of the charcaters in the film are pretty bland, no one is memorable. Most of the film takes place in Istanbul, so if you have seen very little of Turkey you get to see quite a bit of its capital in the film.

Accidental Spy is an ok movie, something to have only to complete your Chan collection and if you desire something you haven't seen before. I would find this difficult to want to watch over and over unlike other films such as Legend of Drunken Master or Who Am I.

Editorial Review:

Jackie Chan returns to dazzling form! If you've watched Chan's Hollywood movies (Rush Hour, Shanghai Noon) and been unimpressed, The Accidental Spy is a good introduction to the astonishing fights and extraordinary stunts that make Chan's Hong Kong films such events. Chan plays an exercise-equipment salesman who turns out to be the missing son of a Korean double agent who's connected with drug lords in Turkey who have developed a super-addictive opium--got all that? The plot is largely nonsensical, a series of implausible escapades that frame the action; but what the movie lacks in logic, it makes up for in spectacle, ranging from a burning runaway truck cascading off a bridge to a stark-naked Chan pursued by thugs in a Turkish bazaar, defending himself with every implement in sight. This is why Jackie Chan is the biggest movie star in the world--check it out. --Bret Fetzer

Center Stage 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Center Stage re-enacts the short life of Ruan Lingyu, who was arguably the cinematic queen in the 20's to 30's. The half-documentary film, with an unrivaled performance by Maggie Cheung, stirred the memory of the sensational silent film actress, whose films are rarely watched by the current generation of audience.

Ruan was a modern woman, yet still suffering from the weakness of her character, which eventually led to her suicide under the haunting of the malicious press. The man she loved betrayed her in distrust; her previous lover sold gossips to the press. She finally broke down in her no-exit fighting with "the mighty fear of the words" (from Ruan's will). Stanley Kwan and Maggie Cheung combined exquisitely in portraying the conflict between the stifling society and the rebellious yet weak character.

The movie chose to switch alternatively between the past and the present. With some footages of Ruan's films and interviews with the cast and relevant people in the present, it provides a contrast of the ways that we see things in different times, inspiring people to linger and rethink of their lives. A superb movie, in which Maggie Cheung and Ruan Lingyu, the two divas of their own days, meet across the time, flawlessly.
