Drunken Master: Won Fei Hung (Jackie Chan) stars as the mischievous young son of a martial arts school master who is constantly clowning around when he should be learning kung fu. After his comic antics injure the son of a powerful local man, his father enlists the help of his sadistic uncle to teach his son a little self-discipline. Snake In The Eagle's Shadow: It's toward the end of the Ching Dynasty in China and a 200 year old feud known as the deadly Eagle Claw society have eliminated all styles except for the Snake Fist style of martial arts. An evil Eagle Claw master known as Lord Sheng Kuan (Hwang Jang-lee) is obsessed with eliminating any member of the Snake Fist schools, so him and his clan go out to hunt down the last practitioner of the Snake Fist, Grandmaster Pai Cheng-cheh ("Simon" Yuen Siu-tien).

Editorial Review:

The Time Machine (2002)
While the 1960 version of The Time Machine remains a science fiction classic, this adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel benefits from a dazzling CGI facelift. Digital wizardry shows us the awesome splendor of eons passing in an eye blink, while Wells's heroic time traveler--played with appealing conviction by Memento's Guy Pearce--is given a stronger motivation for piloting his time machine 800,000 years into the future. Long after New York City has crumbled and the moon shattered by a nuclear accident, Pearce finds a new home with the peacefully primitive Eloi, after confronting the subterranean Morlocks (courtesy of Stan Winson's monster shop) and their evil overlord (Jeremy Irons in wicked, pigmentless makeup). Trading Wells's social commentary for pure adventure, director Simon Wells (the author's great-grandson) maintains the story's legacy of wonder, despite a few hokey embellishments. Catering to a younger audience, this Time Machine is fun without being particularly distinguished--a treat for the eyes, if not the brain. --Jeff Shannon

The Tuxedo
Jackie Chan looks spiffy in The Tuxedo, but the movie needs a tailor. No Jackie Chan movie could be a total misfire, however, and he's charmingly self-effacing here as a hapless chauffeur who inadvertently replaces his injured super-agent boss (Jason Issacs) and foils a madman (Ritchie Coster) who plans to infect the world's water supply (!) and reap a fortune selling pure bottled water. Jackie's a bumbling superhero after donning his boss's high-tech, Inspector Gadget-like tuxedo (it even has a "Mambo" setting), and curvaceous co-agent Jennifer Love Hewitt coaches him in crime fighting while closing in on the bad guys. It's all as routinely ridiculous as it sounds--Jackie's faux James Brown act is the only real highlight--and as critic Roger Ebert observed, the climax hinges on an insect queen that doesn't exist in nature! So, while Jackie and Jennifer provide a few moments of stellar stunts and random amusement, you can blame this mess on screenwriters who didn't do their homework. --Jeff Shannon

I watched this movie as a kid and loved it! Ten years later, it's a different story. Do not buy this movie if you expect a good quality dvd with good dubbing. Buy this Dvd if you expect some good-ol-fashioned kung-fu action. Also, my little bother (seven) loved it!

great 4 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the first movies Jackie directed. The story was made basically as the film was being shot. So, don't expect too much on that end. The drama and comedy are a bit uneven, but who cares? Good fight scenes throughout. Don't expect a lot of props as in his later movies, and this was before his trademark outtakes. Though not indicated, it appears this version is pan and scan. As with all his movies strive to get a widescreen version. Pan and scan usually ruins the action.

Editorial Review:

Jackie Chan spent many years as a relatively obscure Hong Kong stuntman and actor; it was only after he took over his own films that he started on the path to superstardom. Realizing that nobody bought him as the next Bruce Lee, Chan shrugged off stoicism in favor of characters and situations that capitalized on his comedic abilities and everyman's charm. Portraying an average guy caught up in extraordinary situations allowed his fans to believe that they, too, could pull off some of Chan's incredible stunts--which, as the painful outtakes that run at the end of most of his films remind us, he largely performs himself.

Unfortunately, Chan might have learned his lesson a little too well: now that he trusts his own instincts above all others, he seems to be loath to let others tell his story for him. On the 75-minute My Story, it's a fatal flaw: rather than providing what fans want--either non-stop action or a truly revealing look at Chan's life would be fulfilling--this documentary feels more like a late-night low-budget infomercial for those who don't really care about Chan. (It even includes the full trailer from Chan's first Hollywood starring effort, Rush Hour.)

The only time Chan truly lets people into his life comes in My Story's final moments, when he talks about what his monomaniacal professional drive has cost him in terms of a personal life and what his life's goals truly are. Even that falls flat in the end, when Jackie, surrounded by children, tells of his one, true dream: "Peace." For a more professional look at Chan's life and career, try the A&E-produced Biography installment on him. --Randy Silver

Buddies Thomas (Jackie Chan) and David (Yuen Biao) drive a high-tech lunch truck in Spain, where they get mixed up with a femme fatale and a novice detective (Sammo Hung), setting the stage for lightning-fast martial arts and wild car chases through the streets of Barcelona. At times reminiscent of the many THREE MUSKETEER films, WHEELS ON MEALS was one of the first films to star Chan, Yuen, and Hung, who were once part of the same Peking Opera troupe. WHEELS showcases their athletic abilities, including Chan's surprising versatility on a skateboard.

Kickboxer extraordinaire 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The film career of Jackie Chan, the most famous of the Hong Kong martial arts stars, stretches back to 1962. Chan was 8 years old when he appeared in the now lost "Big and Little Wong Tin Bar." Since then he's been in almost 100 movies, mostly made in the Orient.

Jackie stars as a young man out to avenge his father's murder in "Master" and is part of an ensemble in the Dirty Dozen-ish "Fantasy."

For twice the kickboxing action, try BCI's INVINCIBLE WARRIORS.
