Editorial Review:

An early comedic effort from one of today's greatest physical comedians, Half a Loaf of Kung Fu is a parody of many of the melodramatic kung fu movies that were coming out of Hong Kong in the 1970s. The credit sequence sets up the tone as Chan performs a dream sequence full of tongue-in-cheek kung fu moves and visual puns. (Chan's ninja is revealed to be a beggar, his priest chews out a group of monks only to then have to do chores himself, and there's even a reference to Jesus Christ Superstar!) Chan plays Jiang, a hapless orphan who is amiable enough but always getting into trouble. In dreams he is a skilled fighter (with the help of eating spinach à la Popeye), but in reality he's sort of a dope. A kind beggar and an opportunistic traveler with a bad case of gas teach him skills that bring him into the employment of the Sern Chuan Bodyguards, who are protecting a priceless gemstone--the Evergreen Jade. A band of robbers attempts a heist and Jiang and his flatulent friend defeat the crooks in comic style. Originally shelved in 1978 by director Chan Chi Wa (who directed Chan in Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin), Half a Loaf of Kung Fu was released in 1980 after Chan's popularity rose. --Shannon Gee

Editorial Review:

Years before he became a genuine Hollywood action star in Rush Hour, Jackie Chan played a daredevil secret agent out to recover a lost cache of Nazi gold, in this globe-trotting 1990 action comedy--with a trio of beautiful women at his side (one Chinese, one Japanese, and one German) and a stereotyped bumbling Arab terrorist hot on his heels. Condor is still one of the most expensive Hong Kong movies ever made, and looks it: there are actual Spanish castles and huge vistas of North African desert sand. (Months later, several planeloads of the stuff were shipped back to Hong Kong for some pick-up shots). A full-size set depicting an underground German wind tunnel was constructed on a Hong Kong sound stage. But there's also an extended car-and-motorcycle chase that employs an obvious stunt double, and episodes of bawdy farce (trimmed for the U.S. release) that feel like padding. Chan was already 36 when he directed this superstar vehicle, and he'd sensibly decided to soft-peddle the hard action stunt work---until the finale, that is, an all-out head-kicking kung-fu battle that moves back and forth across huge seesawing slabs of clockwork machinery. Chan seems to be working harder than ever in other areas, too; he's never given a more energetic or engaging comic performance. For pure mind-boggling entertainment value, the peak Jackie experiences are still Project A Part II, and the original Police Story and its semi-sequel, Supercop, in which Chan costarred with Tomorrow Never Dies Bond girl Michelle Yeoh. --David Chute

Lo Wei's attempt to cash in on Jackie 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

It seems that the movie makers used lots of footage from the first movie, making the story choppy and incomplete. Apparently the studio that owns the film rights tried to cash in on first Fearless Hyena movie's success. The real story: The Lo Wei monstrosity. Jackie had just started filming this movie before moving to Golden Harvest. Lo Wei was quite bitter and even got the Triads involved. Jimmy Wang Wu got Jackie out of trouble so Jackie did two favors for Jimmy, making Fantasy Mission Force and Island of Fire. Lo Wei was very bitter over this entire situation so a couple of years later he put together Fearless Hyena 2 from the little filmed footage that he had, outtakes from Fearless Hyena, and new scenes that they shot using a Jackie Chan look-a-like. All of this nonsense is why I don't like this movie that well. It does have Jackie in it and didn't turn out that increadably bad so I'll give Lo Wei that credit. But none for trying to cash in on Jackie's name. A real disappointment in many fans opinions. Go see the first one... and you shouldn't waste your time with this one. With that said... you may feel stupid buying the Fearless Hyena double-video pack. Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware).

A fun, ridiculous romantic comedy 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is the film Stephen Chow directed before Shaolin Soccer. Do not get it if you want "kung fu" hilarity. That being said, this movie made me laugh out loud a number of times. Stephen Chow plays a desperate extra/actor who can't get a scene to save his life. He works at a Neighborhood Welfare House, and in his spare time, gives free acting lessons. Of course, these lessons are hilarious, as he attempts to teach a young wannabe Triad gang member how to act tough when collecting money, and also an expensive call girl how to act virginal and like she's still in college. There are alot of funny scenes, including a hilarious spoof of John Woo films and a cameo by Jackie Chan. I recommend it if you like Stephen Chow's comedy bits in Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle! The subtitles are a bit tough at times, though.

biography of Stephen Chow 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of Stephen Chow's best movies. Only second to his "Chinese Odyssey" series, in my opinion.

The whole movie seems like his biography as an actor who started small and because of his "professional spirit" or non-stopping pursue achieved his goal of becoming a "real" actor (actually king of comedy) in the end.

A bit of Cinderella kind of flavor. But the plot is great and the pace of story-telling is compelling. Though the ending is a little bit too hasty, it is very moving.

excellent style 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

this movie's plot is weak and steriotypical, the dubbing is [bad] and Jackie barely smiles, but the kung fu, which is what I bought it for in the first place, is excellent.

I study both the snake and the crane styles of shaolin and I must say, aside form all the cartwheels and usuall razzle dazzle of movie kung fu, the coreography, (which Chan was highly involved in) was excellent and mostly true to the real styles of shaolin.

If you like alot of action, blood and childish swear words dubbed in to movie then buy this.

It's excellent

Editorial Review:

Jackie Chan apprenticed in a series of straight-faced martial arts revenge films before he found his true calling as the clown prince of kung fu in Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and the original Drunken Master. The sprawling clan-war conspiracy adventure Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin is one of his best pre-fame efforts, a tale of tenuous alliances and double-crosses, with cocky young warrior Jackie in the middle stirring up trouble. The sly rascal in the den of thieves, however, is actually an honorable young acolyte on a mission of vengeance. It's the usual story, with a little more comedy and plenty of old "strike and pose" fight scenes energized by Jackie's youthful athleticism. The opening theme song was cribbed from the same music library that supplied Monty Python and the Holy Grail. --Sean Axmaker

Editorial Review:

This early film of Jackie Chan's was meant to shepherd him into the '70s kung fu genre pantheon made internationally popular by Bruce Lee. Indirectly it did, but probably more out of positioning than performance. Chan was to assume Lee's position as kung fu superstar, made evident by his role in New Fist of Fury (1976), the somewhat clunky chop-socky sequel to The Chinese Connection (on which Chan had worked as a stunt man). Directed by Wei Lo, New Fist of Fury picks up with two siblings fleeing a Japanese-occupied Shanghai for Taiwan, where their grandfather runs a Kung Fu school. However, a Japanese martial arts teacher has plans to run all the schools under his own name, eventually killing the grandfather. Chan plays a young thief who, at first, wants nothing to do with fighting but then finds his calling as the new leader of rebels against the Japanese occupation. Chan of course is no Bruce Lee (although during one dramatic sequence, a still of Lee is cut into the frame to "remind" viewers of the filmmakers' intentions) but New Fist of Fury marks Chan's first entry as a leading actor in Hong Kong action films. --Shannon Gee
