Beautiful and Tragic 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Rouge is the story of a 23 year old Chinese Prostitute named Fleur who falls in love with a client, the heir of a rich merchant. When her lover's father refuses to let them marry they run away together, but tragedy soon follows, and faced with the sadness of separation, the two decide to commit suicide together.

Fleur becomes a ghost, doomed to search for her lost lover who has not followed up in hell. Enlisting the aid of a newspaper editor and his girlfriend, she publishes an ad in the paper directing him to meet her one last time. The sound track of this movie was first rate, and the acting was superb.

I really enjoyed Fleur, even if I thought her lover was rather wimpy. The movie is well worth the watch, a must for Hong Kong Ghost film fans!

Ultimately beautiful 5 out of 5 stars.

The prostitute Ruhua fell in love with Chen Zhenbang from a rich family, but the Chen's family opposed their marriage. Chen decided to leave his family and stayed with Ruhua. But the cruelty of life without the ability and endurance to make a living soon follows. Half a year later, they decided to commit suicide together and promised to stay together in another world. After her death, Ruhua could not find Chen, but she refused to drink the Mengpo soup to forget the past so that she could reincarnate. After 53 years of waiting, she went back plaintively to look for him. But in the end, she found Cheng Zhengbang was still alive and had become a mumbling lowlife old man. Disappointed with his cowardice, she returned him the rough box that she wore for 53 years and left calmly.

The screenplay writer Lillian Lee (also the author of the original novel) often writes in a rather less elegant tone. Never a perfect love story with a faithful couple, but rather one-sided with a determined prostitute, radical about love and a dandy from a rich family with a coward deep inside his heart. But with Lee's extremely versed cultural knowledge and somewhat rebellious style (but not for the sake of just being rebellious), the storytelling always turns out to be poignantly enthralling. Stanley Kwan weaved it so well in every detail without destroying the fluency of the movie or the fluency of my feeling throughout the movie. Artistical without affectation; masterful without pretentiousness, this one easily falls into my favorite type.

Editorial Review:

Jackie Chan spent many years as a relatively obscure Hong Kong stuntman and actor; it was only after he took over his own films that he started on the path to superstardom. Realizing that nobody bought him as the next Bruce Lee, Chan shrugged off stoicism in favor of characters and situations that capitalized on his comedic abilities and everyman's charm. Portraying an average guy caught up in extraordinary situations allowed his fans to believe that they, too, could pull off some of Chan's incredible stunts--which, as the painful outtakes that run at the end of most of his films remind us, he largely performs himself.

Unfortunately, Chan might have learned his lesson a little too well: now that he trusts his own instincts above all others, he seems to be loath to let others tell his story for him. On the 75-minute My Story, it's a fatal flaw: rather than providing what fans want--either non-stop action or a truly revealing look at Chan's life would be fulfilling--this documentary feels more like a late-night low-budget infomercial for those who don't really care about Chan. (It even includes the full trailer from Chan's first Hollywood starring effort, Rush Hour.)

The only time Chan truly lets people into his life comes in My Story's final moments, when he talks about what his monomaniacal professional drive has cost him in terms of a personal life and what his life's goals truly are. Even that falls flat in the end, when Jackie, surrounded by children, tells of his one, true dream: "Peace." For a more professional look at Chan's life and career, try the A&E-produced Biography installment on him. --Randy Silver

martial arts masterpieces for those on a budget 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Ok, so VideoAsia's picture quality sucks, well most of the time, that is because they are taking these forgotten, all but lost films and releasing them, obviously using old VHS tapes as their main source, or possibly only source. You're gonna have to get over that and accept the trade in in the low cost of the package. Good news though, for those people who hate the poor picture quality, it is only a real problem for older titles that VideoAsia so loveingly gives us, this release has many younger titles, many of which I have seen on other VideoAsia releases, and they looked pretty good.

This set will be awesome, I am sure of that, because many of these titles I already have, so I know. The set contains MACHINE GUN DRAGON (1978) starring karate legend Sonny Chiba and Japanese gangster (Yukuza) star Bunta Sagawa, a great pairing. FORCE: FIVE (1981) is directed by American chopsocky great Robert Clouse (Enter the Dragon, Game of Death) and co-stars Richard Norton and kickboxing legend Benny "the Jet" Urqiduez. SKINNY TIGER, FATTY DRAGON (1990) stars comedian Karl Maka and one of martial arts cinema's true heavyweights Sammo Hung. "Master killer" Gordon Liu is is very funny in (TWO) SHAOLIN KIDS IN HONG KONG(1994), the rest of this "comedy" is not. Donnie Yen stars in HIGH VOLTAGE (1995), the copy in VideoAsia's Donnie Yen Collection looked great, but had no English subtitles or dubbing, let's hope they've done something about that for this release. Jet Li and Rosamund Kwan, from the Once Upon a Time in China series, return in (DR. WEI IN THE) SCRIPTURE WITHOUT WORDS, a splended Indiana Jones wanna-be that should be seen by all martial arts fans and especially Li's legion of supporters.

The other four titles are all documentaries, of which only one I have seen. TOP FIGHTER 2 (1996) is a pleasing documentation of the woman of martial arts cinema, interviews with the likes of Michelle Yeoh, Cynthia Rothrock, Angela Mao, and Sophia Crawford, among others. JACKIE CHAN: THE KUNG FU YEARS, I would guess is about his early work in old school chopsocky flicks. MMA EXTREME, I know nothing about this one, but as a fan of mma, I looked foreward to seeing it. The last title is THE REAL BRUCE LEE 2, a movie that until VideoAsia's Dragon Immortal collection about a year, I didn't even know it existed.

Good summary of the "Kung Fu Flick" 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I remember back inthe 80s, saturday afternoon kung fu movies on TV, the Kung Fu triple feature matinees at the local downtown theater. These old school films remain some of the most entertaining and thrilling movie experiences to date(even inspite of all that CGI!).

Chop Socky explains the story of how Chinese cinema was born with emphisis on the martial arts movies. It offers a good ecapsulated overview. Taking you through the early 1920s up to the present day. My only gripe is that it was too short. Not enough in the special features. There also should have been more on the Shaw Bros Studios. After all... they WERE fung fu theater during the 70s and 80s! Despite that, this is a must to own if you call yourself a fan of the genra.

Editorial Review:

In this action-packed original co-production from the Independent Film Channel, filmmaker Ian Taylor takes a behind-the-scenes look at the stars, fighting styles and weaponry of Hong Kong cinema from its earliest beginnings to the latest big-budget epics. Through rarely seen film clips, detailed scene analysis and in-depth interviews with martial arts masters such as Jackie Chan, Jet Li and John Woo, CHOP SOCKY: CINEMA HONG KONG provides an in-depth portrait of Hong Kong's wholly original and undeniably unique contribution to world cinema.

Rent it-don't buy it! 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is one of those films Jackie Chan made under contract to Lo Wei, who was trying to squeeze him into Bruce Lee's mold. Unfortunately, in this film virtually everyone gets to beat the crud out of Jackie (even the girl!!)--how this was supposed to make him look like Bruce Lee, I don't know. The fights are poorly staged and badly filmed--in one fight Jackie just stands there and lets the other guy kick him in the head, then gets up and lets him do it again, over and over. Furthermore, in his attempts to look like Bruce, he just comes across as a mean SOB. The only humor here is of the unintentional kind--but there is loads of that-especially in the love story that runs parallel to the standard revenge plot. (There's the girl friend whose heart Jackie cruelly broke, but for whom he still pines, and there's the girl who loves Jackie, but beats him up and tortures him every chance she gets--yeah, it's weird!) That's the only reason I gave it any stars at all. If you are on a mission to see every movie Jackie Chan ever made, then this one is actually pretty entertaining, if only to marvel at how anyone could have dreamed that a little bow-legged, putty-nosed clown like Jackie Chan could ever have been another Bruce Lee!!

John Woo is at work with a decent martial arts film. 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is not a usual John Woo film with the gunplay he's famous for but has a decent story and slow at times with some good fights scenes if you just give it a chance. It's Woo so it could never be bad.

I fell asleep watching it! 2 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

This early film of Jackie Chan's was meant to shepherd him into the '70s kung fu genre pantheon made internationally popular by Bruce Lee. Indirectly it did, but probably more out of positioning than performance. Chan was to assume Lee's position as kung fu superstar, made evident by his role in New Fist of Fury (1976), the somewhat clunky chop-socky sequel to The Chinese Connection (on which Chan had worked as a stunt man). Directed by Wei Lo, New Fist of Fury picks up with two siblings fleeing a Japanese-occupied Shanghai for Taiwan, where their grandfather runs a Kung Fu school. However, a Japanese martial arts teacher has plans to run all the schools under his own name, eventually killing the grandfather. Chan plays a young thief who, at first, wants nothing to do with fighting but then finds his calling as the new leader of rebels against the Japanese occupation. Chan of course is no Bruce Lee (although during one dramatic sequence, a still of Lee is cut into the frame to "remind" viewers of the filmmakers' intentions) but New Fist of Fury marks Chan's first entry as a leading actor in Hong Kong action films. --Shannon Gee

Pretty bad 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

"Young Tiger" is a pretty bad movie no matter what way you look at it. The acting is bad, the fights are mediocre, the dubbing is bad, and the focusing is terrible. It is almost like an amateur with a camcorder woke up one day and decided to make a movie. The only reason that I gave this DVD two stars is because Jackie Chan is in the movie.

What is that hair on the side of jackie's face? 1 out of 5 stars.

stupid and dull, dont buy this or rent, u should watch the tellatubies instead.

A Sad Dissapointment 1 out of 5 stars.

The picture quality was horrible, as was the sound. Jackie Chan played a small role. At times the characters ventured into conversation that seemed more like propaganda than anything. This movie wasn't entended as comedy, but I couldn't help but laugh at how cheesy it was.

I was fooled by the cover! 1 out of 5 stars.

I bought this DVD after seeing young Jackie Chan posing with some serious kung fu move on teh cover. This movie has really nothing to do with Jackie Chan. He plays some back drop bad guy with a huge mold on his face. You do not see any great fighting moves at all. Here is another things, why is this move called "Young Tiger"? It should be called a female cop and a taxi driver. A guy who plays the taxi driver and a female playing cop are the lead actors in this move. None of their characters are memorable, and their fighting moves does not impress. Skip this movie!

Everybody was Kung Fu fighting.... 3 out of 5 stars.

NINJA DEATH and its two sequels highlight this small collection of martial arts films. Another unusual item here is an episode of a little-remembered TV show that starred Lee Van Cleef as an aging ninja master. The plots of these are minimal-- mostly set-ups for hand-to-hand combat, ninja-style. NINJA ASSASSIN action is sure to please all fans of this ancient combat style.

For many an hour of kung fu fighting, these ten titles (plus 40 more) are also available on the MARTIAL ARTS 50 MOVIE PACK COLLECTION. Check it out!
