Pretty entertaining 4 out of 5 stars.

This movie is pretty entertaining. Although Jackie Chan is on the cover, his appearance in the movie is minimal. I got a good laugh from the goofieness of it all. I would recommend this movie if you like goofy movies.

Superb popcorn flick. 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a fantastic slice of non-stop, high octane, martial-arts, comedy horror thriller in the vein of Van Helsing and Underworld and even the Blade movies. It's a film that entertains and doesn't take itself too seriously. And if, like me, you thought Underworld and Van Helsing were great concepts ruined by poor execution then look no further for how this kind of film should be done.

Of course the plot doesn't bear scrutiny; something about a European vampire killing off vampire royalty to collect their blood in order to open an ancient and sacred book that grants a vampire daylight immortality (!) Nice. And continuity's dubious; at the start of the film our hero and his sidekick have trouble fighting off 10 vampires by the end vamps are being despatched in the dozens and our two heroines (KPop stars and both excellent to boot (Imagine Atomic Kitten doing Ultraviolet. It just wouldn't work!)) have strength and endurance beyond their perfectly formed but still small and dainty frames.

But none of this detracts from the overall experience. The fight scenes are fast and furious and, yes, over-the-top, with some superb CGI/wire work interplay. The comedy includes direct parodies of more famous films along with plenty of inter-character rivalries. The first meeting and subsequent fight between the two female leads is hilarious. The actors themselves also appear to be having a ball and their enthusiasm's infectious. So long as you've checked your brain out at the start you'll be hollering along in joy. The vampires are also wonderfully characterised. The Royal Prince living in his hi-tech coffin refusing to lower himself to actually sucking blood: He'll have his decanted by a servant, thank-you-very-much! And the way they move is captured perfectly; exactly how I envisioned Count Dracula in Stoker's novel: like a malevolent Spiderman!

It's also worth noting that Charlene Choi is some of the prettiest Asian eye candy around :o)

And it's got Jackie Chan in it.

So in conclusion, it's a must. I can't think of a better way to waste an hour and a half and I'm pretty sure this film will be taking several more hours off my life. Not that I mind in the slightest. It's so enjoyable I've even ordered its two sequels, sight unseen!

Good luck getting this DVD to play well... 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

For starters, I will admit that the widescreen presentation of the English dub of this film is probably the best I've seen of any release of it. However, the film itself is a mediocre patchwork mess, with plenty of footage with a Jackie double. During one fight scene, blink and you'll miss both Mars and Yuen Biao, longtime JC collaborators.

The biggest problem with this release is that the DVD is poorly manufactured. On two different DVD players, I could not get the disc to read properly. The disc would jump to random chapters every ten minutes or so in one DVD player; it wouldn't even read at all in the other one! I would suggest saving your money and, if you really MUST have this movie, buy one of the many other releases of the film. No matter how you slice it, the film isn't very good anyway, letterboxed or not!

The Best Version Of This Film 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Thist is probably the best version of this film (included Japan version from Pioneer - that is the version around it acts here).
The picture is according to my opinion very good and the dub (From the Original Language) is one of the best that I ever heard.
Unfortunately there are altogether 7 errors on the DVD. The chapters move on up once. Chapters - 2,5,8,10,16,18,19
The B-Side of the DVD is an insolence - contains the Chinese Version, with chinese and english subtitles.
It's only an old vhs copy.(No sharpness,stripes)
The Jackie Chan Music Video is very good, only the sound is missing!

Sometimes I wonder if reviewers even own the DVDs. 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

(...) Having taped Jackie Chan Adventures on both Kids WB! and Cartoon Network, and having recently purchased all three JCA DVDs used (never pay retail!) I can WITHOUT A DOUBT say that these episodes are intact. Much like Cartoon Network does, this DVD plays the opening credits, the show, the ending credits. Kids WB! plays approx. 90 sec. of the episode (the intro), then the opening credits, then the rest of the show, and then the ending credits. For example in the first episode on the first DVD, the opening theme/credits are played, then the 90 sec. intro which takes place in the castle (it is this part which Kids WB! would play before the opening credits, then the scene changes to Uncle's shop and the rest of the episode continues. Where these DVDs really deviate is by playing one opening credit, all three episodes in "movie format", then all three "Ask Jackie" spots and finally a combined ending credits. Strangely, though they use the opening theme music during the end credits as adopted in later seasons NOT the "Chan is the Man" song originally used.

(...).

All JCA episodes on these DVDs are intact, though why Columbia/Tri-Star (Sony distributes the show, but not the DVDs) chose to go with the "movie format" instead of just a straight-forward Episode 1, Episode 2, etc. and then stopped making the DVDs with Episode 9 is beyond me. I would like to see a Season One, Season Two, Season Three, and Season Four box set (especially since JCA has been picked up for a fifth season), hence my only giving these DVDs three stars each.

no widescreen 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The back of the dvd box clear states that 3 of the movies are presented in widescreen format yet when I played those movies all of them are in fullscreen with no option that I can find to play the movies in widescreen, which I prefer, so don't buy this item unless your ok with fullscreen format. Just wish I knew this before I bought the set.

A good, well acted movie with interesting characters.C.S.(Jordan Chan),Tango(Cheng Kee Yin),and Blue(Kelly Chan) are 3 agents working for the C.I.A.,(who also have been friends since they were very young)specializing in a virtual reality training program that turns ordinary people into great fighters. When C.S.'s fiance is killed and Blue is kidnapped by an international terrorist named Alien, who brings her to Hong Kong,C.S. and Tango decide to train in the v.r. program to rescue Blue. After they rescue Blue, they still have to find Alien because he has his own plans of causing riots around the world by using subliminal messages.Blue and Tango learn from their superiors that the v.r. training has a side effect on some of the trainees. The side effect is violent outbursts, and C.S. expiriences this while searching for Alien.C.S. kills off a bunch of Aliens henchman during a fit of rage. When the three agents are ordered back to the U.S.,the C.I.A. tries to handcuff them and bring them back to be brainwashed.C.S. while escaping accidentally shoots Blue dead. This eventually leads to a showdown between C.S.,Tango(now brainwashed and ordered to kill C.S.),and Alien.A good all around film. The gunfights and fistfights are not the best ever put on film, but are still good and refreshingly original.Kelly Chan is one fine looking lady.

This volume of the KUNG FU THEATER collection presents a double feature of martial-arts classics from the vaults of Hong Kong cinema: in NEW YORK CHINATOWN (1986) a newly arrived immigrant finds himself caught in the crosshairs of a Triad gangland war; and in MASTER OF DISASTER (1990) two kung fu students get mixed up in an international drug smuggling ring.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: MISCELLANEOUS/SPECIAL INTEREST Rating: NR UPC: 787364663590

"It is not easy to be a delivery boy!" 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Contrary to popular belief and even in contrast to Jackie Chan and many other sources, "Cub Tiger From Kwang Tung" (aka Little Tiger of Canton) was finished and even had a small release (probably around 1973 or 1974, I currently cannot find exact details) though it was filmed a few years earlier in 1971, done a little before his stunt work in "Fist of Fury". Chan was given an opportunity to star in this movie by his "biggest sister" from his Peking Opera youth whom was now an assistant to a film producer. In Chan's autobiography "I Am Jackie Chan" he has nothing good to say about this experience stating "One night, the director and producer quietly disappeared, taking with them any hope that the movie would be finished." It is not his first film either, he had done several movies as a child actor in the 60s with "Big and Little Wong Tin-Bar" (1962) being his first appearance in a movie. He looks quite young though and slight of build compared to his later appearances.

Jackie Chan (he uses the screen name Chan Yuen Lung using Sammo Hung's old opera name) portrays Hsiao Hu, an adopted precocious martial art youth who has been brought up by a semi-sadistic foster dad (Tien Feng: Fist of Fury, Young Master) and enjoys sparring with his foster sister Hsiao Lam (Shu Pei-Pei) when he is not working for his Uncle Chiang at Chiang Kee Noodles. Hsiao Hu does not know that his real Dad died absorbing Lu Chi's aka 3rd Brother (Kwan Chung) "Leg of Doom" (the move sounds good, does not look that impressive though should be named "Leg of Partial Hurt") so Tien Feng could get away and raise his Hsiao Hu.

Meanwhile, back at the noodle shop, a group of ruffians order a plethora of food, yet refuse to pay. Hu's superior Kung Fu is shown as he destroys them in fighting. Lu Chi just happens to be their boss and this angers him immensely when he finds out. Hu's foster dad is perturbed by his fighting and tortures him with excess work. At first it is just moving extra pails of water, but after another incident (even though he saved his sister) he is forced to put his hands into broken glass (great dad). Later, he forces Hu to "really" fight his foster sister (later in the film though he states that they were made for each other). Of course, Hu's foster dad is only trying to prevent him from using his Kung Fu so he won't be found out by the vengeful Lu Chi (though I do not think this point is ever explicitly said). As in any martial art movie

I can only recommend this for Jackie Chan or martial art movie fanatics for completeness. The editing is quite bad and the story is a bit hard to follow leaving lots of floating plot points. The lifted score (I am pretty sure this is not an original piece) is quite annoying as it is repetitively used. The martial art action is decent though, Jackie Chan looks quite better than everyone else and so the pacing is sometimes off in the fights. The finale works as well as it should though the highpoint of the film is the demonstration of skills during the beginning credits where Chan gets to show off his technique and acrobatic skills (the 70's Jackie films show Chan do more of his Peking Opera background than later films as well as this film shows him pre-eye surgery).

The film quality of the Rarescope R1 edition is quite poor with a cropped picture (shown 2:35:1, but a lot of image is missing), burnt-in subtitles that are occasionally replaced by "other" subtitles when the cropping interferes (and that replacement also has typos and grammar mistakes) and copious amounts of damage. Also, the back cover description has many mistakes with its summation of the plot. The funniest is the combo of "his father has forbidden him ... from learning the martial arts" and "... killed his father many years before." Still it is nice to have available in a non-"Master with Cracked Fingers" version shown close to what it originally was.

The extras are a hodge-podge of trailers, still gallery and a 6-plus minute questionnaire and answer with Jackie Chan. The still gallery is not too bad with what looks like lobby cards and stills from the movie. The Q and A with Jackie Chan is a shaky camcorder print of Jackie being questioned after a showing of "Rumble in the Bronx" (quick talk about the longer HK cut). So this was probably originally filmed around 1997 in the UK (the year it came out in UK) with other clues such as the accents and he talks quickly about future projects: Police Story 5 (probably talking about New Police Story though that would not come out until 2004), a western story (obviously talking about the future "Shanghai Noon" (2000)), a South African story ("Who Am I" (1998)) and about finishing A Nice Guy (later known as "Mr. Nice Guy"; though filming was done in 1997). Not much is learned from this extra other than a quick mention of the "fireman story" that never came about and audiences that are annoying are ubiquitous. Jackie is asked to perform some moves (which he absolutely hates to be asked to do) and he feigns a previous knee injury though later he can be seen bouncing around without any problems.

Editorial Review:

Jackie Chan s first starring role sees him play a young waiter who also happens to be a kung fu fanatic although his Father (Tien Fong-Fist of fury) has forbidden him from learning the martial arts.Jackie trains in secret and is a Young Master in his own right. Local store owners seek the help of Jackie to protect them from a greedy Chinese extortion ring.Tempers reach the boiling point when Jackie discovers that the crime kingpin behind the extortion scheme killed his father many years before. Jackie sets off on a one man vengeance trail featuring some ground-breaking choreography (from Jackie Chan and Corey Yuen). For its time this classic from 1974 still packs a punch today and it s easy to see why Jackie Chan became an international superstar.First time ever released outside of Hong Kong and Japan a must for all Jackie Chan fans.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: SPORTS/GAMES/MIXED MARTIAL ARTS UPC: 787364754991

We Need a Series Boxed Set! 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I rated one star not for the show itself, but for this DVD and the few others that were released. These DVDs are missing a few minutes, often the teasers before the theme song comes on. I am also befuddled at the lack of a complete season or series set of this wonderful series. It would be so awesome if a series boxed set was released, with each and every minute of the show accounted for, and the Ask Jackie bits as well. I'm not sure why the quality of these DVDs are so poor, or why only a few were ever released.
